age on marriage cert recorded as "full"

Post by jbrooks » 05 Jun 2018 19:20

I now have two occurrences where the age on post 1837 marriage certificates is stated as "full":-
marriage age full.JPG
marriage age full.JPG (34.86 KiB) Viewed 6086 times
In AS and FH there would appear not to be the capability to record this as depicted on the marriage cert as I believe it is expecting data in a date format:-
full age in FH.JPG
full age in FH.JPG (106.19 KiB) Viewed 6086 times
Looking in the records window there is not an age "field". Age not entered so that makes sense.

Can the age at marriage be specified as full in FH?

Regards Jonathan

Gedcom does not allow a "string" in the Age field. All I do is to add a Note stating for example "Both shown as full age", or "James shown as of full age"

I rely on the Source record having a Media image and Text From Source transcript saying Full.

Typically I set the Age field to Older than age given below and set Years: 21, which is what Full means.

Tatewise posted his reply (which makes the same suggestion) seconds before I posted this. This is why I rarely bother replying to posts nowadays - he always beats me to it :)
When you enter information with Ancestral Sources, if you require a transcription of exactly what is on a certificate or census, etc. you enter that into the Source text box at the bottom of the screen. The data that you enter into the various text boxes, or main census columns will end up recorded as Facts and will frequently need to be entered slightly differently than on the source document. In both Ancestral Sources and Family Historian, the occupation might be Ag Lab but you would enter that as Agricultural Labourer. Or place of birth might be Warrington or Warrington, ditto but you would enter that as Warrington, Lancashire, etc. So in the same way you need to consider what Full means. If it means older than 21 then record that in the age field as >21 which is allowed in FH and AS.

Thanks Jane & Mike,

If I set "Age field to Older than age given below and set Years: 21" will this "kick in" any automatic calculations?

Apologies for being pedantic just I always try to record as-is.

Kind regards Jonathan.

What sort of automatic calculations did you have in mind?

It may have some effect on Estimated Birth/Death functions used in some Queries and Plugins, but since Calico Pie don't publish the estimation algorithms we cannot be sure.

I have updated how_to:recording_a_marriage_civil_partnership|> Recording a Marriage/Civil Partnership to include the Full age advice.

Thanks, I have added a note and a satisfactory display in my diagram:-
j and s ages mc.JPG
j and s ages mc.JPG (32.9 KiB) Viewed 6056 times
Although I have the text "Age of John Brook" and Age of Sarah Brown". I believe that with no data with a text expresion this should not be displayed. This is something that I have elsewhere and keep meaning to look at. Possibly something to do with my text functions.

Functions are listed here:-
mr cert func.JPG
mr cert func.JPG (25.75 KiB) Viewed 6056 times
and the functions are:-

=ExistsText(%INDI.FAMS[1+]>MARR%,"Marr:") %INDI.FAMS[1+]>MARR.DATE:COMPACT% in %INDI.FAMS[1+]>MARR.PLAC:TIDY%
=ExistsText(%INDI.FAMS[2]>MARR%,"Spouse:" . %INDI.FAMS[1+]>~SPOU>NAME:FULL%)
Age of %INDI.FAMS[1+]>HUSB>NAME:FULL%: %INDI.FAMS[1+]>MARR.HUSB.AGE%
Age of %INDI.FAMS[1+]>WIFE>NAME:FULL%: %INDI.FAMS[1+]>MARR.WIFE.AGE%
%INDI.FAMS[1+]>MARR.NOTE2%

Am I missing some "=" signs?

You need to make the Age of... conditional, so try:
=CombineText( Text("Age of " . %INDI.FAMS[1+]>HUSB>NAME:FULL% . ":"), %INDI.FAMS[1+]>MARR.HUSB.AGE%, "", "")
=CombineText( Text("Age of " . %INDI.FAMS[1+]>WIFE>NAME:FULL% . ":"), %INDI.FAMS[1+]>MARR.WIFE.AGE%, "", "")
