Moving notes from RootsMagic to FM

Post by wombat1 » 30 Apr 2018 11:29

Hi

I’m thinking of moving form Roots Magic to Family Historian and have downloaded the 30 day trial version.

Initially I have moved in a gedcom file to “play” with and FH seems easy to use. I use places a lot in RM and think that I will have to use a plug in to help with that.

However I have a lot of notes on RM and they did not transfer in a gedcom file. Is it possible to move these notes from RM to FH easily? This may well be the deciding factor in my choice!

Thank you

Have you seen this information in the FH Knowledge Base (and the links at the bottom of that page where it covers converting Notes) -
how_to:import_from_roots_magic|> Import from RootsMagic (RM)

and be aware that the trial version of FH doesn't support plugins.

I have moved this to the Importing and Exporting Forum that is more appropriate.
David's advice is good.

Could you please explain your comments in more detail so we can help you.

Why do you think you need a Plugin to help with Place names?

How do you know those RM Notes are not in the GEDCOM file?
Where exactly have you looked?
Usually everything in the GEDCOM file gets imported to FH but may not be immediately obvious.

BTW:
As a newcomer please study how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and its links to other [kb]|[/kb] pages.

Thank you all for quick responses. I very much like FM and am fairly sure I will purchase as my husband, too, was impressed with ease of use (although he leaves all data entry to me!). I have been using RM for over 10 years so it will take me a little while to become familiar with FH.

1 Places. Using RM I can generate a list of place names with associated event and people which I couldn’t see an immediate way on FH? I noticed there were plugins for places available so thought they could be worth exploring

2 Notes. Thank you. I used the method in FAQ to import a gedcom file. Unfortunately I think this was an error with just one individual and it was the first record I fully explored. For some reason the notes associated with his life events (eg census) did not transfer but other individuals seemed OK although not able to check all of course.

Re Places: You can produce a list of all the uses of any given place. Use Tools > Work with Data > Places, then select the place of interest from the list and click Where Used on the right. This will display a results set showing all the records which use that place and the context in which it is used. Clicking on the record name in the first column will open the Property Box for that record. Better still, double-clicking on the Place name in the third column will open the Property box with the focus on the particular fact where it is used.

You could also simply use the All Facts Query (via View > Standard Queries > All Facts) and sort by place, or use the Map Window and click on any place to see the events related to that location.

1 Places: Once you have purchased FH there is also the Where Used Record Links Plugin that not only works for any selection of Place name records, but any other type of record too. See how_to:finding_where_records_are_used#view_place_links|> View Place Links for details of all the methods mentioned earlier, or alphabetic_index|> Subject Index under P & R that lists finding Place Records Where Used.

2 Notes: If the error is related to just a few Individual records, then the Notes can easily be copy pasted from RM to FH.
If more widespread, then we can help you investigate the reason and solution.
Have you checked the Exception Report produced when you created the Project from the GEDCOM?
(You did create a Project via File > Project Window > New Project?)
Sometimes, when FH imports Facts with invalid GEDCOM details, those get added as a Note and obscures the original Note except on the All tab of the Property Box.
