Add Citation Sources Retrospectively v.6.2

Post by klm2OUMK » 09 Mar 2018 09:16

Can I add citation sources retrospectively in v6.2 using the new Automatic Source Citation Pane? I had been using FH v.4 for several years and recently updated to latest v6.2 . Up to date I had not been using Automatic Source Citation in the older v.4.

Can you please let me know if there are 'how to....' tutorials use the new Automatic Citation Pane in v6.2 to enter sources retrospectively? If so does it tell me how to enter BMD certificate images and into 'which file(s)' ?

Welcome to the FHUG.

The Automatic Source Citations feature is not ideally suited to adding Source Citations retrospectively.
It works best when new data is being added or existing data is modified, although there is the Copy Pane Citation option.
So, if you are not intending to change any existing data, except to add Source Citations, then that feature is not ideal.
To read about the feature, click the Automatic source citations button and then its Help button.

A better option is to use ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources that is designed to capture new Sources.
That allows Source Citations to be added to existing facts with options to keep or update existing data.
There are tutorials that explain how to use the Ancestral Sources companion program.
It ensures data is entered consistently, including BMD Certificate and Census images, etc.

Have you used Source Citations at all before, or are you just about to use them for the first time?
If you have never used them before then checkout Sources Methods 1 & 2 in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers which covers other topics you may not be aware of as they are new in FH V5 & V6 such as Internet Data Matches and Plugins.

Practise adding Source Citations to the Family Historian Sample Project before updating your own project.

Hi Mike

Thank you the welcome to FHUG and your prompt reply.

No I have not used 'Source Citation' before so I will check out Sources Methods 1 and 2 in the Knowledge Base. Also I will practise adding Source Citations on the Sample Project first as you suggest.

Thank you for confirming that Automatic Source Citation are not ideal to adding Source Citations retrospectively
