Multiple marriages in the Focus window

Post by DownSouthDrew » 21 Feb 2018 16:37

Hi all,
I have just downloaded the trial version of FH v6.2.6 having been with Family Tree Maker for many years.
I am very impressed with the layout and the potential for customising things with plugins (registered version).
My question is regarding multiple marriages.
Is there a way to show the latest marriage as being the first marriage in the focus window? As I would like to see the latest marriage as the first in the list of marriages.
Currently, the latest marriage is shown at the bottom of the "Spouses & Children" window. In the case of three marriages it is completely off the screen.
There is probably a very easy solution but as yet I've been unable to find it.

Thank you all - in advance.

Welcome to the FHUG Drew.

Yes, there is a very simple explanation and solution.
Within FH its data is sometimes presented in database order rather than Date order.
This is particularly so if there is no Date available.

The solution is to re-order the data in correct order.
See how_to:sorting_children|> Sorting Children, Spouses & Facts into Order.

As a newcomer I advise you study how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and follow its links into our [kb]|[/kb] pages, especially those dealing with importing from FTM.

Hi Mike,
You know the old adage " not seeing the wood for the trees" - well that's me!
I've have been looking through the 'knowledge-base', there is such a lot the program can do I couldn't see the link at all - not to mention the two little arrows in the property box!!!!!
Thanks Mike, hopefully should I have another question, it will be a more taxing one, I've still a lot to learn, but love the layout of the program.

Drew,
In order to get the latest/current marriage at the top in the focus window, I take it you have now used the arrows on the main tab of the Property box (or the All tab) to arrange the spouses in what is actually the wrong order chronologically. This is not normally recommeded, and you need to be aware that this has implications for the way the spouses will appear in diagrams. To see the effect, open a diagram with the main person of interest as the diagram root. Then in their Property Box on the main tab use the arrows to switch the order of the spouses. You will see the diagram change. You also need to be aware that if you ever use Tools > Re-order Out-of-Sequence Data you will need to untick Spouses so that they do not get re-ordered automatically (assuming that there is a marriage date for each, so the program knows they are in the wrong order.)

Hi Lorna,
Thanks so much for your help and advice. I followed your instructions and see what you mean and now understand the implications.
It is nice to see how adaptable FH is.
