Splitting Help

Post by grahame_matthews » 03 Dec 2017 08:45

I am trying to use the Split Tree Helper to enable me to send a Tree to a website without including living persons.I created a copy of the Project by opening a new Gedcom File (and then making a copy) then intending to use the Splitting Tree Helper.I am finding it difficult to use the Helper and wonder if there is a more simple explanation than in the Official Guide and the out dated guide in the Knowledge Base.I am now trying to get back to my original position and to delete the copy Gedcom File. When I try to delete the Copy Project I get the message "A family historian project should have one (main) project file and one gedcom file. The project folder contains more than one project and/or GEDCOM files. If you proceed with delete more than one project may be deleted.Do you wish to cancel the delete?"
The total files shown are 1 project file and 2 Gedcom Files!
How do I delete the Copy Project and the 2 Gedcoms?I want to retain my Original Project intact. The Project window shows my original project and also the Copy Project. Thanks Grahame Matthews

Welcome to your first FHUG posting Grahame.

It sounds like your original master Project is intact.
It also sounds like you have somehow created a copy of the Gedcom file in your copied Project.
Obviously, FH is very cautious about deleting Projects, which is why there are warning messages.
But if you keep confirming that you want to delete the chosen Project then if you choose the correct options it will be deleted. So when it asks Do you wish to cancel the delete? answer NO. Eventually you will be asked to confirm the files to be deleted, and confirm the deletion.

BTW: I assune that all the Project copying & deleting is being performed via File > Project Window > More Tasks that offers Copy, Delete & Rename.

The Split Tree Helper is not the best tool for creating a privatised GEDCOM file without Media.
I say without Media because most online website products do NOT support bulk upload of Media files.
Also the FH style of GEDCOM is often NOT ideal for most online website products.

The recommended technique is given in how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with/without Media under how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia#export_to_website_without_sensitive_data|> Export to Website Without Sensitive Data and having digested that guide you may have more questions. Note that not all the steps are necessary for every online product, and once the steps required are identified the process is quicker than it seems from the description in the guide, that has to be quite comprehensive.

Hi -Thanks for that -I have now been able to delete the Copy Project leaving my original project intact. Can you please walk me through the process of editing my original project to remove all living persons so that I create a file which removes all persons subsequent to my father.Do I just create a copy of the original project without reference to Gedcom and them apply the Splitting Help Screen.I eventually want to export the edited tree by using Gedcom to the website TNG.Thanks for your assistance.Grahame Matthews
PS. I should perhaps mention that I am using FH6.
