Windows update

Post by gwilym'smum » 22 Nov 2017 07:19

Mike
This isn't actually a Family Historian question but a plea for help. Last night I clicked on the message to do a Windows update. It took 2 hours. When it had finished my favourites bar had lost 2 sites. I managed to find out how to alter the names to get my sites back, however this morning all my text is tiny and there is a gap on either side of what would be the sides of the page. Hope you and admin don't mind my asking but have no idea how to get it back to normal.
Thank you Ann

The latest Windows update did the same thing to my PC (but not my wife's). As well as the text sizes, all of the icons on the desktop have been reset to small (which actually I quite like). Apparently Microsoft have removed the option to change system font sizes, however this tool is being used quite successfully by quite a lot of people (me included): https://www.wintools.info/index.php/adv ... nt-changer (it's free).

You download the program and just double click to run it, it's self contained and doesn't install itself into Windows. When you run it, it askes if you want to save your existing settings first, so you can always get back to where you started after you've played with the settings.

It sounds like it may have been the major Fall Creators Update Version 1709.

It is not clear whether you are talking about your entire desktop screen, or just your browser window that is affected.
Could you post a screenshot?

David's suggestion sounds like a good solution.

I knew you would ask me for a screen shot one day Mike. I know you like the pic to appear on screen. I got the screen shot into Paint then saved as jpeg and then attached but didn't know how to make the picture appear here.
It is I think the update you mentioned. It happens in Google. I tried Google Chrome and it seems to be better but I don't particularly want to change to Chrome. I had an online chat with a chap from Microsoft and he said zoom it like on a phone. This is ok but every time the page changes it reverts to the small screen. My desk top seems ok. All my programs are ok, touch wood.
Thank you David for your help. I will have a go (as a last resort as I don't like jiggling with settings, I'm totally useless when it comes to things other than very, very straightforward things!)

When he said " zoom it like on a phone" I'm not sure what that meant.

I've just opened this thread with the Edge browser (although I usually use Chrome), and click on the three dots . . . at the top right of the screen, then on the Zoom control set it to 125% or 150%. On my PC it then remembers this setting if I open new tabs, and even if I open another copy of Edge to look at another web page.

Yes, now we can see you are using the Edge browser, it looks like has reverted to 100% zoom.
That sort of thing often happens with major Windows Updates especially to built-in apps like the Edge.
Follow David's advice to increase zoom to 125% and hopefully that will stick.

Firefox does not have that default zoom option, but click its hamburger menu top right and in Options there are Language and Appearance settings for Fonts & Colours but I found you have to use the Advanced button and untick Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above for them to take effect.

Thank you so much for your help. I am so grateful I am back to normal. The computer settings were at 125% and when I tried to alter those it went wrong. They were ok it is the internet buttons that needed the correction.
Very best wishes Ann
