Handling tombstone pictures

Post by Cowilf » 02 Nov 2017 08:45

I just discovered Billiongraves.com. They are associated with MyHeritage. They often provide useful dates and a picture of the grave

Could anyone please explain me how to handle the pictures with this information? Do I have to handle each grave as a separate source of information and attach the picture to it or is there another possibility?

Tx

Yes, treat each Gravestone as a Source in much the same way as a Burial record or Death Certificate.

I assume you usually use Method 1 'splitter' style Source records with one for each source document.
So create a Source record and set its Type as Gravestone.
The Text From Source will hold a copy of the memorial inscription and the the Media tab will hold the image.
Other fields would identify the location of the cemetery and the location of the grave.
Possibly the Repository record could hold the contact details for the cemetery.

That Source record could provide several Facts, not just about the deceased, but also other family members, as the inscription often mentions close relatives, and some may even share the same grave and thus give multiple burial dates. So each of those Facts would cite that one Source record.
