Birth details of children

Post by janefrances » 21 Oct 2017 20:17

I've just created a source, attached it to the fact tab for Military Service, Royal Air Force btw 1917-1920 then attached the image to the file and cited the source to my ancestor. I'm quite happy with this however within these records it gives the date and place of each of his children's births. I would like to cite this against each child's birth fact but it looks a bit odd having a Military Service Record against each of his children's births. Would appreciate any thoughts on this? Many thanks.

I have some cases like this. In the Where within Source field (in the yellow souce citation pane) I enter 'Children's dates of birth in ....form' (where .... is the form title or number if available) and in the Note field of the citation I add a note that the family details were recorded in the military record. As the military records are only indirect evidence for the birth details I set the Assessment level as Secondary.

:) Thanks Lorna, am I correct in thinking that if there was say, three or four children's birth dates and places mentioned then I would type all of them in the where within source field?

Jane, each Citation is independent.
So, for the 1st child's Birth event Citation you can say Where within Source that child's details are located.
Then for the 2nd child's Birth event Citation you can say where that child's details are located, and so on.
Or you can put the same information in each Citation; whatever you are comfortable with.

I always find it useful to generate a report for the person concerned - in this instance, generate a report for one of the children (each if you like). Then have a look at the text of the relevant foot-note / end-note to see whether it makes sense.

I look at the report, rather than the yellow source pane, because the yellow source pane contains an truncated version of the source's Short Title title, whereas, the way my reports are set up, they show the (long) Title if it's there (and the Short Title if no (long) Title). Plus you can see all the Where Within Source, etc., in one place with the rest of the Citation.

Have a look at the print, as I say, and see if it makes sense - if it simply says "Military Records", without a name, then you need to add the father's name to the (long) Title. Tweak away until what you have makes sense.

Certainly, it makes perfect sense to me to have the father's Military service history as a (secondary) source for those children's details.

I've took on board all the advice and set the Assessment level as secondary, I've generated a report of one of the children and it all looks fine :) Thank you
