install new trial version

Post by TMG_refugee » 16 Sep 2017 19:22

About 20 month ago i installed FH version 6 to see if FH would solve some of my issues. I had already converted my TMG database to Rootsmagic two years earlier. I realized then that I had a lot of cleaning up of data that was not caused by any software product. Just my overzealous use of TMG.

At some point, certainly for version 7, I would like to reexamine FH to see if it would make sense to convert. I already made the determination that I could use some of FH features just by exporting and importing my data while still relying on Rootsmagic for maintaining the data.

It appears based on past releases that FH is probably due for a new version and I would hate to buy version 6 only to need to purchase and install the upgrade to version 7 in a short period of time.

Is there any way to download a trial version at anytime since I have already installed it once?

Usually, when a major new version of FH is released, any recent purchasers of the previous version are given a free or heavily discounted upgrade option.

You could simply try the 30 Day Free Trial again, and if that is disallowed due to the previous installation, then contact Calico Pie and throw yourself on their mercy.

But note that some of the most powerful tools for cleaning up specific data are Plugins, but they are the one and only feature NOT supported by the 30 Day Free Trial.

Calico will normally allow 1 trial extension if you contact the support desk, but remember to test everything you want in the 30 days if you are not intending to buy as I don't expect they will be willing to issue a 2nd extension.

I would warn against buying the current version if you think a new version is coming soon. I myself bought one version 5 - I think - and it turned out that if I had bought it just one week later, I would have qualified for a free upgrade to version 6.00

On the other hand if you are seriously considering long term use of fh, you should buy the complete software in order to explore its associated software and plug ins. fh software is transformed and extended by external add ons - software Ancestral sources (for data entry) and many plug ins which replicate some later developments which were an integral part of TMG.

One TMG refugee resolved to use fh as it came out of the box. But much of the plug in work done by Mike and Jane in particular has been to provide us TMG refugees with screen views and capabilities we were accustomed to in TMG.

However you should also examine the threads on this forum highlighting limitations in import. I work with multiple trees. I already have three TMG trees imported. Plus major projects started from scratch in fh.
But have taken the decision not to import any more Projects from TMG until or unless Calico Pie provide for import of sort dates - which are imported into Roots Magic.
It might be interesting to know what you are prefering to do in fh which makes it worth importing and re exporting your data?
