That is strange Andrew.
What Windows version are you using (10, 8, 7, Vista) ?

Use Windows File Explorer to check the following.

Can you please confirm whether the path C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ does or does not exist.

Also confirm whether the path C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Plugin Data\ does or does not exist.

While there please right-click on the Family Historian folder and choose Properties at the bottom.
Then select the Security tab and confirm whether Everyone is listed with most Permissions Allowed.

Is there anything unusual or non-standard about your configuration of those ProgramData folders?

Can you create custom Queries, Report Types, Diagram Types, Text Schemes, etc?

Hi Jane

Windows 10

C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ exists.

C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Plugin Data\ exists (there is a file from Ancestral Sources there)

Family Historian folder Properties / Security tab has "Everyone" listed with most Permissions Allowed (it didn't have "Full Control", so I checked that to be sure. But it didn't cure the error when the plugin runs.

The only thing about the ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ folders is that there are some 124,000 files in the \Map\Cache sub folder

I can create custom Queries, Report Types, Diagram Types, Text Schemes, and use a number of them.

Might the large number of map cache entries be a possible factor - eg the plugin running out of memory or timing-out? (Drive C is a SSD)

Thanks for the suggestions - anything else I can try?

BTW: I am Mike not Jane!

I have found the cause of the problem.
I was mis-reading the error message, which is nothing to do with C:\ProgramData\...

The problem is associated with running the Plugin from a standalone Gedcom file instead of a Project.
I now realise that scenario has occurred before, and has been fixed in some Plugins, but not that one yet.

Sorry, but please run the Plugin from any Project and it will work OK.

Thanks Mike(!)

That looks like the problem - as you say, I'm running a standalone .GED file rather than a project.

I went this way many years ago as I wanted to keep a particular folder structure for all my supporting images, docs etc. Could I convert into a FH project, and get the project to recognise and retain my existing folder structure?

Many thanks

Andrew

Yes Andrew you can, but in the meantime open the Family Historian Sample Project and run this Plugin from there.
The FH settings are identical for all Gedcom and Projects.

See how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers Family Historian Sample Project for details.

Please start another thread in the FH General Usage Forum for advice about creating Projects with structured Media folders, which is a well established feature available since FH V4 and used by many, including me.

Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings V2.8 is now in the Plugin Store and fixes the standalone Gedcom problem.

Mike

Back from holiday and I tested the new version of the plugin in PlayOnMac as promised.

Unfortunately it doesn't work as well in POM as it does in Crossover.

I get the following errors in order

2.png
2.png (133.89 KiB) Viewed 7016 times

The Invalid name. error is NOT a Plugin message, so must come from POM and we need to find out where.

It correctly extracts Family Historian Version 6.2.5.0 from the Windows Registry, which is better than Wine.

It then fails on using RegRead when trying to perform the Backup, but does Backup all the Application Data files, which is also better than Wine, but as you say not as good as Crossover.
