Map Window - Place Problem

Post by davidm_uk » 13 Jun 2017 14:57

In my Map Window I have one place with a ? on the left where all of the other places have a tick box. I can't find a way to correct it, there aren't any obvious problems with the Place name itself.
Any ideas?

Try putting an 'e' on the end of Layer-de-la-Haye. It works OK then (as long as there are spaces between the commas).
An alternative is to click on the name in the column on the left in the map window and drag the marker into the correct position manually.

Edit: After more experimenting I don't think it matters if there are no spaces between the commas . First time I tried it didn't seem to work without spaces but second time it did!

Nope, adding the 'e' makes no difference, and the structure (ie comma placement) is consistent with all of my other places. Have tried closing and restarting FH, make no difference. Also tried removing the hyphens (shown as Layer de la Haye in Google Maps), still have the '?'.
Btw, I have auto geocoding turned off, as I'm manually correcting a lot of incorrect placements.

Ah, I didn't know you had auto-geocoding turned off! In that case I would expect you to be able to enter the correct coordinates manually in the same way as for any other places you are correcting. Either enter the coordinates directly in the Property box for the Place record or click on the place name in the column on the left in the map window and drag the mouse to place the marker in the correct position on the map.

The ? will stay until you put the co-ordinates. Which you don't have entered.

The Help page for the Map Window Legend says that ? means Automatic geocoding failed. Place was not found.
That page also gives the meaning of the other legends such as the ticks, pink background, the lock, etc.

As has been said, it won't change until co-ordinates are entered either manually or by auto-geocoding.
