Backup files

Post by dave s41 » 23 Apr 2017 22:25

Can anyone explain for me why my FH6.2.4 has suddenly started to make all my backup files "read only" files,I am saving them in the same place i have used since day 1 but now find i cannot load any of my data as it tells me that they are" read only."
any he;p on this would be thankfully received, Dave in Staining.

I presume by backup files you mean the compressed zip folders created by the FH Backup command.

I presume by load data you mean using the File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup command.

The most likely explanation is that a Windows 10 Update has upset your File Permissions.
Can you save and open and modify other files such as Word documents in the same folder?
Right-click the folder and choose Properties then Security tab.
Does your account user name have Permissions that Allow for Full control, etc.

I often open Word docs by simply clicking the ikon in the folder. But when it opens it ends up with a temporary number in a temporary file and 'Read only' which is annoying

I have since put the cursor over the Word doc right click to open a menu and picked Word 2016. That opens the document how I want it to. That is with the original title and my able to edit it (it doesn't have the 'read only' label.
That also happens with Excel.
All this is my regret for upgrading to Windows 10. I never had this problem before and when any docs open in the temp folder it remains there.

Victor, it sounds like you may need to reset your app defaults.
When you left-click any file it relies on those defaults to use the correct app to open the file.

So use Start > Settings > System > Default apps > Choose default applications by file type.
Scroll down to the .doc and .docx and associated file types.
Ensure the default application is Microsoft Office Word.
If not, then left-click on the central icon and choose Microsoft Office Word.

Do the same for .xls and .xlsx and associated file types.
Ensure the default application is Microsoft Office Excel.

Win10 does seem to have a habit of losing or changing file associations. I regularly have to reset the association for .jpg files to be my preferred picture viewer (ACDSee Viewer) rather than the default W10 viewer, and W10 continually loses my preferred setting for .gif files. Similar problems with .pdf files.

Yes, the recent Windows 10 Creators Upgrade once again reset a lot of default applications (to point to the relevant Microsoft application) and also screwed up a few permission settings. That said, once I changed these back to what I wanted I have had no problems.

My 'in place' Windows 10 migration a year ago on several laptops (myself and family) was smooth, but I must say this mandatory push of new Windows 'feature' updates is rather frustrating. The users have lost any control over what comes down to their systems. So far, have not had any significant permission issues since migrating.

Mike
After I posted my message I went to the MS site.
I pay an annual fee for One Drive and that includes Office 365 upgrade
I hadn't downloaded this but have now and it took quite a few hours to download and install
Looks as if I have finally got all these MS docs (Word, Excel etc) as default 2016.
I have just tested a Word doc and it opened as it should be

I hope all the other docs will open like this

Yes, when you install any program it will normally sets its preferred file type associations as the default.
This is what has happened when you installed MS Office 365 that includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc.
But it is worth remembering the alternative method which is a lot quicker.
