Two Marriages

Post by allan1 » 25 Mar 2017 13:35

Hi all, help required to enter an additional marriage please.

The two people in question married in an RC church in 1917, which I entered using Ancestral Sources, but having researched further I've discovered that they previously married in a C of E Church.

Trying to enter the previous marriage via Ancestral Sources again removes the details from the later marriage, leaving only the first.

I would ideally like to show the two dates somehow in my diagrams as there is a child born within those dates.

Has anybody managed to resolve this situation that can help please?

Yes, as it says in its closing dialogue, AS does not support two Marriage Events in the same Family record.
But it does allow an new Family record to be created for the new Marriage Event so choose that option.

Then in FH select the original Family record, use Edit > Merge/Compare Records, and select the new Family record.
You should not need to do anything more than click the Merge button.

Oh well, merging just got rid of one of the marriages. So I've undone it, at least they are both listed in the reports if not in the diagram.

Thanks for your help, it just wasn't what I was after.

What exactly did you do?
Merge worked when I performed it.
When you are viewing the Merge Records dialogue can you see both Marriage Events?
As shown below the Merge Into will Keep its Marriage, and the Merge From will * Add * its Marriage.
Everything else is a Null Merge or Keep, so the only change is to add the new Marriage.
(BTW: As usual, I always experiment with the Family Historian Sample Project.)

To get both Marriages listed in Diagrams, ensure the Text Scheme in its Marriage item has MARR[1+] looping index on every MARR tag.

Both Marriages appeared by default in all the Reports I tried (ISR, FGS, Narrative).

Have you just undone the merge, leaving two Family records? I would not recommend that, as duplicate Family records can cause various problems.

Following the merge, if you are looking at the Focus window you will only see the first marriage date. It can only show one marriage date per Family record. Similarly the main tab of the Property box for the Family record will only show the first date. But both dates can be seen in the Facts tab of the Property box for the Family record. Also, if you look at the Facts tab for either of the Individual records you will see two marriage events listed there.

As an alternative to using AS to create a second Family record and then merging them, you could just use the Property box Facts tab of either the husband or wife and use the green Add Fact button to add the extra Marriage event. You would need to manually create the new Source record of course.

Thank you, I've been called away since I posted this query so sorry not to have replied sooner.

I will have another attempt on my return in a few days and thank you for the screen shot, very useful for an amateur like myself.

For the benefit of others, and for us to advise others, which method did you use?
