Family Historian on Ubuntu 16.04
I have been using Family Historian for many years on Windows, but I have become very frustrated with Windows as with all the recent updates, bloat ware and Microsoft accessing data from my machine I have abandoned Windows now and gone over to Ubuntu Linux.
I have installed FH V4 on my laptop and it works OK with Ubuntu.
My question is, how do I apply the update to V6 within Ubuntu?
I installed FH V4 using PlayonLinux which is front end for Wine, but cannot seem to find a way to run the upgrade to V6.
Does anyone have any idea how I can do it?
I am new to Linux, so if there is anyone that can help, easily understood steps would be appreciated.
Many thanks.
Gary

Probably the easiest way is to install the v6 upgrade in a fresh Wine wrapper and input the various licence numbers when asked.

Re: Family Historian on Ubuntu 16.04
Welcome to the FHUG Gary.
Might any advice in how_to:family_historian_v6_on_crossover_wine|> Family Historian V6 & Ancestral Sources V5 on Crossover & Wine be of use? See Program Updates.
The point Colin is making, and you may be unaware of Gary, is you do NOT have to install FH V4 in order to install the V4 to V6 Upgrade. You simply install the upgrade from scratch, and it will request both the V4 and V6 licence details.
However, having done that you will still need to apply the latest free upgrade such as FH V6.2.2, or any future free upgrade, to the same existing bottle.
BTW: Do not overlook the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide to transfer everything from your old Windows PC to Ubuntu Linux.

Many thanks for the speedy response. I was not aware that the V6 upgrade could be installed as a standalone program. I was under the impression that it had to be installed over V4.
That's good news that I can install it separately.
I see that many people seem to use Crossover to install FH.
Is that the preferred way?
I get the impression from the that it is easier to install software updates using crossover rather than Wine in Linux/Ubuntu.
Be good to get some feedback on this?
Many thanks.

Re: Family Historian on Ubuntu 16.04
Gary
IMHO it is easier to use Crossover rather than Wine. I have one Bottle in Crossover that contains both Family Historian and Ancestral Sources, I have not managed to do this in Wine. It is also easier to upgrade Family Historian in Crossover as you just install the update to the existing bottle, I never managed to do this successfully in Wine.
Even though Crossover is built on Wine as an end user I find it easier to use all be it at a cost as Wine is of course free. Crossover is usually one version behind where Wine is so if you need a particular feature that is only in Wine you may have to wait a few months for Crossover to catch up.
I think that Crossover is worth what it costs as it makes my life easier. YMMV

Re: Family Historian on Ubuntu 16.04
It appears that most use Crossover on Mac, and a few use Wine on Linux.
Crossover on Mac seems to pose fewer problems than Wine on Linux, but whether that is due to Wine or due to Linux is not clear because we have too little feedback.
Colin Valkrider is our most experienced user of FH & AS in both Windows and Crossover.

Hi,
pleased to report that I have installed FH 6 and the update without any real problems once I understood how crossover works.
Many thanks to the advice from the forum. Saved me losing more hair!
Keep up the good work, the forum is really good.

Victor, I think you have misheard, or the truth has been distorted.
Just do a Google Search for Microsoft Canonical Ubuntu Linux Foundation.
Microsoft bought Canonical last year and have joined the Linux Foundation.
They have produced a great deal of Open-Source software and there is talk of Ubuntu for Windows 10.

Thanks for the clarification.
I don't use Linux so didn't take much note of what was said
