Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Yes, sorry, there is a bug that depending on which Root Name style is chosen affects the pane headings, only in Root Person, Partner and Siblings panes initially, but then all panes when Plugin is run again.
Looking back, the Plugin has sometimes underlined the pane headings and sometimes not, so which is preferred?
The attachment Quick Family Facts Version 0.8 Date 16 Dec 2016 always underlines the pane headings.
[Attachment deleted as now in Plugin Store.]
In recent attachments Quick Family Snapshot Version 0.6 always underlines headers, and Version 0.5 never underlines headers.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
I prefer to have all six headings the same, and preferably underlined.
I would also prefer it if the lower two panes had a slightly smaller share of the window. In several cases, all four of the top panes need scroll bars, while the bottom panes need only one at most.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Missed that - I'd been concentrating on the names and dates etc so much that I didn't notice the headings. But my preference would be for underlining the Root's name only.
As a minor stylistic point, I wonder if it would also look better in the Partner pane if the underline started with the Root's name, rather than the preceding "="?

I would prefer all six headings to be underlined. As for the root person's name, I would prefer italic and underlined. Since there are so many different preferences by different people, maybe you should keep the options and add one for underlining/not underlining the headings.

PeterR said "I would also prefer it if the lower two panes had a slightly smaller share of the window. In several cases, all four of the top panes need scroll bars, while the bottom panes need only one at most." The vertical share of the window is governed by the number of lines in each pane, or to be precise the larger of the number of lines in the side by side panes on one row. So if say one row has 10 lines and another has 5 lines then the first will get twice the share of the second. I am not sure I understand the point about scroll-bars, and maybe needs a screenshot. They should all vanish at about the same point as the window is enlarged vertically, but it helps if the window is enlarged horizontally to avoid horizontal scroll-bars. The objective being to eliminate all scroll-bars, without having large gaps below the tallest panes.
Maybe you are discussing the very case that needs a reduced share for the lowest row when there are excessive Siblings or Children as I asked about in my earlier posting. But I need to know numbers to decide how to adjust the share.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
These two screenshots illustrate the point I was trying to make, each with 5 scroll-bars with the window fully expanded. I reckon that if the top four boxes were all about 50% bigger, there would only need to be one or two scroll-bars, i.e. for the two lower boxes, only.
[Edit] Another thought: perhaps use only the least populated of the two lower boxes when determining the relative pane sizes.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Mike,
I am finding that almost always, there is at least one scroll bar on the top row and one scrollbar on the second row, even though there are no more lines to display. By this I mean, I can't really scroll down as there is nothing there. The box is just not quite big enough to handle the data being displayed. Often, the bottom row is much bigger than it needs to be as I often have many children in the family.
It would be nice if the top two rows were a bit larger (maybe 2 or 3 lines) and the bottom row was limited to how large it could be. I would be happy with being able to see maybe 5 or 6 children's info and then have to scroll down for the rest.
See example.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Try this Quick Family Facts Version 0.9 Date 17 Dec 2016 that limits the share allocated to large rows.
[Attachment deleted as now in Plugin Store.]
Remember also that using Brief BMD Events (or even No BMD Events) will reduce lines per pane, without losing all details.

Mike,
Much better. On the same family I get only one scroll bar on the children cell. I tried it on a few different families and it looked good on all of them.

Yes, I agree, this is much better. Many thanks, Mike.
[Edit] It would be even better if the relative pane sizes were re-adjusted when switching from No BMD Events to either Brief BMD Events or Full BMD Events, or perhaps for any change of this option.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
PeterR, regarding relative pane sizes, I think the attachment Version 0.9.1 Date 18 Dec 2016 fixes that.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
The latest version (0.9.1) seems an improvement, but I'm finding with some of my families - probably especially (or only?) where the current Root has more than one partner - that the number of people to show means that I always get a scroll bar somewhere, and sometimes more than one.
I know it might mean a slight change of direction, and I don't know if it's even possible, but could there be a way of making the division between the panes draggable, so that we can adjust things manually to suit our own families? Then, depending on what was important to me at the time, I could choose to make the whole of one of the panes visible regardless of what the plugin had determined.
Or, instead of draggable divisions, could there be a kind of option or switch so that you could select which row(s) you wished to maximise, or at least prioritise?

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
All looks good to me, sorry not to have got back before, been heavily involved in eating various Christmas meals this week, now just having a break before going off to the next one.
PS I tried changing 'marriage' to partner for everyone as you said, Mike, but doesn't seem to work in all instances. Never mind, since nearly all of my people so far do have a marriage certificate, the ones who don't will just have to live with the word 'marriage' if that is the word that appears in the view that I am using. Can't be bothered to think about it any more.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
@arthurk ~ Have you any particular objective for removing certain scroll-bars?
It is only meant to be a quick popup window to help ratify family groups when investigating such as Census records.
What might work is an option to choose the font size, so more details will fit in each pane.
@Wilfreda99 ~ I am not sure I understand what you are trying to change from 'marriage' to partner.
The popup window will only mention marriage if you have recorded a Marriage Event for a family couple, and you would only do that if they did actually marry.

Not specifically. The kind of scenario that I was thinking of was more or less what you mention here: that if I was systematically working through a list of siblings or children, trying to find them in a census or in the GRO indexes, I could switch effortlessly from my browser to the FH/plugin window and back again, and each time the whole list of them would be visible without any scrolling needed (unless it's the family of 21 or thereabouts that I mentioned before).tatewise wrote:@arthurk ~ Have you any particular objective for removing certain scroll-bars?

Personally I wouldn't want the text size for the BMD data any smaller - though I admit I'm due for an eye test.
But if this is making it all too complicated or mine is a minority view, there is an alternative: it only takes a couple of seconds to select everything in one of the panes and paste it into Word or Notepad etc; then, by using that instead instead of the plugin window you would be able to change the font size if required - and, it's just occurred to me, to add or edit data in FH without repeatedly having to close and re-open the plugin window. I could see that working for me.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Try this Quick Family Facts Version 0.9.2 Date 18 Dec 2016 that has some experimental options.
[Attachment deleted as now in Plugin Store.]
This removes the Root Person underline from the = in front of their Name in the Partner(s) pane.
Pane headings are now never underlined.
There is a 'sticky' Font Size: option to adjust the size of all text.
There are + and - buttons on the right of each row of panes that increase/decrease the proportional size of their row relative to the other rows. This is not 'sticky' so is lost when display is closed.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Mike,
The new options seem to work fine. The only one I am not fond of is the removal of the underline on the headings. Could they be set off in some other way? Larger Font? Box around them? Centered in the box?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Thanks for the further tweaks. Unfortunately I'm finding some inconsistency with the scroll bars as the panes are expanded and reduced. I don't have time now to work out exactly how it's happening, though increasing the Siblings/Children panes sometimes shrinks the Root/Partner pane but without creating a scroll bar if needed.
I'll report further tomorrow, hopefully, unless you've worked it out before then.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Please dont be annoyed, you fh specialists at my asking this.
When a plug in goes through very sophisticated development with user input as in this case, the final version goes on the plug in store.
Do the links to download the previous often very simple versions remain on the Forum thread, so that one can pick and choose the version one would like to use?
I dont want to overwrite earlier versions, if that means I lose the opportunity to go back.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Usually, once one of my Plugins is published in the Plugin Store, I remove the prototype version attached to the Forum postings. Other authors may have a different strategy.
The way to preserve earlier versions is to download/install one you want to keep, then in Tools > Plugins > More>> use Rename to alter its name. In some cases the original name must be retained and just a suffix added to it. Repeat for each version required.
Note that in this thread there are already three different Plugin names (Quick Child Snapshot, Quick Family Snapshot & Quick Family Facts) but only the last one will get published in Plugin Store and all the Forum versions removed. Remember that only one will work with Alt T Q.

Re: Quick Child/Family Snapshot
Thank you, Mike - you appear to have solved the missing scroll bars issue without any more input from me. Version 0.9.3 now seems to address all my concerns.
And a bit more feedback: personally, I prefer the = against the Root's name in the Partners pane as it is now, ie not underlined. (But like I said before, I accept that I might be in a minority.)
