* Export to CSV from FH 6.2

Export from FH 6.2 to csv ? Is there a tool or required sequence to get all or collections of the stored data into generic external file format such as CSV ?

I am familiar with File-maker(relational database) and ubiquitous spreadsheet databases and although more cumbersome, would prefer to deal with the data with those programs.

Initial foray into FH 6.2 has left me baffled. Probably because I am not approaching the FH from a genealogist mindset. Not to mention I am old enough to be curmudgeon and unwilling to learn any further scripts or buttons !

Should add that I have been kindly ? "bequeathed" a family tree by my cousin, of which I am part, but my track record on keeping up with our extended family is not that good. That was my wife's speciality : all done with an address book, Christmas card list and the relationships all in her head. Not a computer in sight !

Effectively, the genealogical data in FH is structured somewhat similar to a relational database.
There are multiple record types, and each record type has hierarchically nested field structures.
So I'm sure you understand it is extremely difficult to represent all that data in a flat CSV file.

You say you're a curmudgeon unwilling to learn further scripts or buttons, so how & why did you get involved in FH?

How much genealogical data have you got in FH that needs to be exported?

What exactly are your objectives?
Are you planning genealogical family history research, or just a contacts address book?

FH is not really that difficult to use at a basic level. You do not have to use all its bells & whistles.
There is a companion book "Getting the Most From Family Historian" that would get you started.

One way of getting your FH file into a CSV file is to use the free programme called GedXlate. It will read the FH gedcom and convert it to several different formats. It is old but still runs happily on Windows 7 & 8 but I don't have 10 to test it on.

Colin, will that cope with all the new FH V6.2 features such as Place records, etc.

No it doesn't it only exports a subset of the valid Gedcom tags. See the attached image to see which tags it exports. But given the OP's original request I thought it would give him what he needs.

Well surely depending on exactly what info is required the easiest way is to run a Query and then save as CSV file.

Maybe Tim, but there would have to be a Query for all the types of record Individual, Family, Note, Source, etc...

With Individual and Family records it is almost impossible to include all the Facts and multiple Names and Family links are tricky. Try it and you will see. So there would also need to be a Fact Query and even then multiple Source Citations are tricky. In fact multiple instances of anything is tricky.

That is why I asked what the background and purpose of the request is all about.
