Sentence Fact Alteration

Post by Carol » 26 Oct 2016 11:55

Hello everyone

I am trying to modify the {date} part of the sentence template in the Property Box so that it includes the day of the week. I want this to apply to all records, not just one individual, and more than one event, eg birth, marriage, and death.

I thought I had achieved this by using the following steps (changing the event as necessary):

Tools > Fact Types > Birth > Edit > Fact Definition > Sentence Template > replace {date} with {date:DAY_OF_WEEK},> {date:COMPACT} > OK

The sentence then reads {individual} was born on {date:DAY_OF_WEEK}, {date:COMPACT} {place} - wonderful, until I save, close, and re-open Family Historian when it has reverted to {individual} was born {date} {place}.

I may not have remembered correctly, but I think the problem only started after I upgraded to Windows 10 Home (Current version 10.0.14393). Or more likely I have lost a few more brain cells!

Please could someone put me out of my misery and tell me where I am going wrong?

Many thanks

Carol

Hi Carol, essentially what you are doing is correct.

Have you been able to create any other customisations such as a custom Query, or Diagram Type, or Report Type since the Windows 10 upgrade?

I am suspicious that the access permissions on the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ folder, that holds such customisations, has been upset.

Can you check the file C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Fact Types\Standard\Standard.fhf
What is its Date modified?
Right-click the file and choose Properties and select the Security tab.
In the Group or user names it should list Everyone with all but Special permissions allowed below.
It should also list SYSTEM and Administrators with similar permissions.
If you carefully open the file in Notepad, and scroll down to [FCT-BIRT-IE], what is the Template?

BTW: I presume it should have read {individual} was born< on {date:DAY_OF_WEEK},> {date:COMPACT} {place} with <chevrons> to make day of week conditional on a full date.

Hello Mike

In answer to your questions:

I have just run the Baptism or Christening Query and in the Result Set I get a list of Individuals and Baptism Dates but then a warning message appears, 'Unable to save changes to query Baptism or Christening Query'.

C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Fact Types\Standard - contains the following files:

Standard.v2.bak_fhf
Name_Changes.fhf
Standard.fhf Date Modified 15/06/2016
GroupIndex.fhdata

Security Tab > Group or user names:

SYSTEM All but Special permissions - Allow Administrators All but Special permissions - Allow Users Only Read & execute & Read allowed

... and then to somewhere I have never been before

[FCT-BIRT-IE]

Template={individual} was born on {date:DAY_OF_WEEK}, {date:COMPACT} {place}

and whilst there I thought I would copy the death template so you could see the difference.

[FCT-DEAT-IE]

Template={individual} died <of {cause}> {date} {place} {age}. <The death was witnessed by {role=witness}. >

Hopefully, with your very clear instructions I have managed to provide the necessary information.

Thank you

Carol

Yes, that all points to the same problem.
The failure to save the query means write permisson is missing.
The Standard.fhf file Date modified is months ago, so nothing saved from your recent changes.
The Security tab confirms Everyone permissions are missing, probably from the entire C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ folder structure.

What is a bit odd is the Standard.fhf file BIRT Template includes on {date:DAY_OF_WEEK}, and from your description you only added that recently, but it has no <chevrons>. So was that added or some other changed made on 15/06/2016?

Nevertheless, the Everyone permissions need to be added, and the first strategy to try is simply to re-install the latest free download of FH V6.2.2 from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade over your existing installation. Nothing needs to be un-installed.

Then check a few files or folders within C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ to see if Properties > Security has restored Everyone.

Hi Mike

Sorry, nothing has changed.

I reinstalled 6.2.2, restarted computer, and checked the security tab of a number of files but Everyone is not there.

Kind Regards

Carol

Ok, so you will have to do it manually.
See http://www.wikihow.com/Change-File-Perm ... -Windows-7 which gives step by step tutorial and although for Windows 7 is same for Windows 8 and Windows 10.

You must be logged in as an Administrator and use Method 1 Changing Permissions.

At step 2 use File Explorer to work on the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian folder.

At step 6 Add the Everyone group and Allow all but Special permissions.

At step 9 tick both Include inheritable permissions... and Replace all child object permissions... to ensure all sub-folders and files inherit the permissions.

Good morning, Mike

As you suspected creating the 'Everyone' Group and the write permissions has solved the problem. In addition, I have learnt something new about the workings of the computer.

Thank you, not only to you but also to all the User Group Members who give so much of their time and knowledge helping the likes of me who do not have the understanding to solve these types of problems.

Enjoy your weekend

Kind Regards

Carol

Glad that worked Carol as sometimes it is not that easy.
