Windows 10 upgrade upsets FMP Hints

Post by gumtree » 13 Oct 2016 11:07

I have just had an update to my Widows 10 programme and I now cannot get the hints from Find My Past to open. I am using Family Historian 6.
What can I do to restore the process?
Thank you.

Sorry about that Joy, but as usual, a few more clues will help resolve the problem quicker.

Exactly at what stage does the problem arise?
When you click a round green link in a Focus Window box?
When you click on a FMP Hint displayed in the Web Window?

Are you using the FH internal Web Window or an external browser?
Whichever one you use, does the problem also affect the other?

Can you login to FMP via your usual browser?

Try running the Write Reg IE Shell Version Plugin, but don't change anything yet, just tell us the current key value shown and Cancel Plugin.

I can log into FMP and the hints work ok.
In the focus window when I click on the round green circle I then click on the FMP hints but nothing appears in tht Web search window. It is just blank, the FMP address comes up across the top.
I clicked use external browser but nothing changed.
I have never used a plugin so am not confident to do so.

Mike - Not that it is of much help but I have just installed the latest update to Win 10 [Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3194798)] but it has not affected FMP Hints for me.

Joy - Have you tried to reload the page by using the circular blue arrow at the top left of the page?

Have you tried simply shutting down and restarting your PC?

One technique that sometimes fixes Windows 10 problems is to Sign out from your account, wait a minute or two, then hold in the PC power button that you use to start it up. Hold it in until the PC shuts down, then restart as normal, which may take a bit longer than usual.

If that fails, then in how_to:internet_data_matches|> Internet Data Matches follow the advice to Refresh Automatic Internet Matching.

If that does not work then I suggest you report the problem to Calico Pie via http://www.family-historian.co.uk/suppo ... t-overview and the + Contact Support link at the bottom. They will be able to investigate the problem, but may need remote access to your PC, which is completely trustworthy.

The upgrade has now finished.
So I have tried everything again.
When I now click on Refresh Automatic Internet connection the hints appear but do not transfer to the Web Search Window.
Any thoughts?

Just to make things more interesting.
When I now click on the green round hints button it says FMP searching (with no record of how many hints) but I can get all the hints from My Heritage?

Try the change of FMP site you connect to as per the how_to:internet_data_matches|> Internet Data Matches as I could not get any hints from the .co.uk site but the .com works perfectly.

gumtree, what do you mean by "The upgrade has now finished." as I thought it had completed on Thursday when you first posted.
Have you tried all the techniques I suggested regarding shutting down Windows 10?
If FMP is searching for a long time for 'hints' then as Colin says try a different FMP region.
If you still get nowhere, please contact Calico Pie as I suggested.

Another guess, which Joy may like to confirm, is that the Windows 10 upgrade took up too much bandwidth causing the loading of hints to stall. My download speed struggles to get to 1 Mbs and I experienced a similar problem whilst the update was downloading. Maybe Joy could confirm that her internet speed is also slow and that the problem occurred during the update and not after.

I changed the region to GB.
It now works so that is all I can tell you.
Thanks
