* Problem with Export Gedcom File Plugin

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Problem with Export Gedcom File Plugin

Post by DerekAth » 13 Oct 2016 10:26

Hi,

I've just tried (several times) to export my gedcom file using the plug in.

Each time, it shows the plugin as "running" but the programe freezes and I have to close it and re-start - any thoughts?

Sorry about that Derek, but as usual, if you could give us a few more clues the problem will be easier to solve.

Which Version of the Plugin are you running?
Does it fail as soon as you run it, or only after clicking the Export GEDCOM... button?
Have you run it successfully before, or is this the very first time you have ever used it?
Do you have a good Internet connection?
What version of Windows are you running and has it changed recently?
Exactly what Plugin Basic Options did you choose?
Does it work OK with the Family Historian Sample Project?

The plugins:help:export_gedcom_file:export_gedcom_file|> Help & Advice and Help & Advice page advises:
"To avoid potential problems, it is advisable, before running the Plugin, to use the following:
File » Validate to detect Gedcom structural errors.
Tools » Find Uncategorised Data or Tools » Plugins » UDF List to detect UDF.
Tools » External File Links to detect and repair broken Media links.
Tools » Plugins » Check for Unlinked Media to reveal orphaned Media."
Have you checked any of those?

Sorry Mike - short of info!

I use it regularly (at least once a week) without a problem - I'm using Ver 3 - updated 16 Sep - I also used the update plugins today just to be sure. I'm running Windows 10 on a very good BT connection - I have had a couple of Windows updates since I last used it - that could be the problem?

The plugin fails after I hit the "Run" button - it shows the plugin as "running" but it has frozen! I have to use the Task Manager to close it.

Hope that helps?

Sorry,

Meant to copy the basic options chosen:

Converts current FH Gedcom and Media files into a format to import into other genealogy programs. Handles custom tags _VAR _UID _LIST _ROOT _SENT _PLAC _SHAR _SHAN _FLGS _ATTR _USED _PEDI _EMAIL _WEB _STAT _TYPE _NOTE _FILE _DATE _KEYS _ASID _AREA _EXCL _CAPT. Handles standard tags FILE CHAR NICK GIVN SPFX SURN ASSO AGE DATE PHON ABBR TEXT OBJE REFN LANG CHAN as required by different genealogy programs. Optionally converts characters into ANSI/CP1252 used by many Windows programs. Optionally converts characters into ISO-8859-1 subset used in TNG by default. Optionally converts characters into UTF-8 with BOM as used in TNG as alternative, or without BOM. Optionally converts characters into UTF-16 with BOM, or without BOM.

Your basic options posting is a copy of the Description box in the Tools > Plugins window.
What I wanted is the settings you had chosen in the Basic Options tab of the Plugin, but you cannot get that far.

I am suspicious that the Windows 10 update has upset the Internet Explorer Shell Version in the Registry.

Can you run any other of my Plugins that have a Help & Advice button, and get that button to display the Help page?

Can you open the FH internal Web Search Window?

Try running the Write Reg IE Shell Version Plugin and tell me the current IE Shell Version reported - Cancel Plugin do not change anything yet.

Mike,

I ran the check installed plugins against the store without a problem. Other plugins appear ok, and help opens in each of them.

I opened the web search window ok.

I'm afraid I couldn't find the Write Reg IE Shell Version in the plugins?

Derek, all your replies look OK.

Sometimes the Plugin options file gets upset and won't load correctly, resulting in symptoms like your 'running' problem.

In File Explorer drill down into the FH Project folder and into the .fh_data folder where the Gedcom file is stored.
Then open the Plugin Data folder and delete the Export Gedcom File.dat file.

Unfortunately, this will erase your Plugin export options, which will need to be reselected when the Plugin hopefully runs.
