deleting a copy of my main FH project

Post by skeptik4321 » 04 Jul 2016 16:11

Hi there, this is a very simple request. I have a full copy of my main project file with 700 names, notes, sources, media photos etc, which I do not now need. I want to delete this copy but I need reassurance that the copy itself will be deleted but that my original project and all the attached media etc will not be affected. I attempted to delete the copy and everything associated with it but I took fright by all the warning messages!
I am running FH 5.0.9
Thanks for your help.

Well you can understand why there are warnings, because once deleted, that Project cannot be resurrected, unless you have separate backups.

As long as the two Projects are completely distinct, then the delete will only affect one Project.
The only possibility of shared files might be Media files, although that is unlikely.
To double-check use Tools > Work with External File Links and ensure that all File Links are listed under Project Data Folder - Media and there is no mention of lettered drives such as C: or D:.
Repeat that check in both your master Project and the copy Project.

If you are sure all the Individual/Family/Notes/Source data in the copy Project exists in the master Project, then it should be safe to delete the copy Project without affecting the master Project.

Thank you Mike, I have now done the checks you suggested and deleted the unwanted copy. It all worked perfectly with your instructions. Yes, of course the warnings are VERY important, but because I am not always confident on my computer I was just a bit worried that something awful might happen!
