Good afternoon
I have recently upgraded to version 6 and also updated computer to Windows 10 this week.
I have two queries please.
Typing information into FH and even typing this, is now very slow. I am waiting for the letters to appear before typing the next one. Quite annoying.
Second query - after updating to V6 I decided to merge all my family files into one big file. I have used FH since V4 and have kept all families separate. All went well with the merge in the main.
Today I was creating a chart and noticed that underneath the name of some ancestors it also said a.k.a. and then the name of another ancestor and sometimes the same person. I have not used aka anywhere in my system. Underneath the aka the list of event is listed correctly for that ancestor.
I do not want to see aka on a chart and cannot work out how to remove it from the box on the chart.
This message has taken me about three times longer to type than in windows 8.
I am not computer savvy enough to know what to do about that. Wish I had stayed with windows 8 now.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thank you.

Re: V6 Help Please
Hello, Welcome to FHUG.
In the example you show in your attachment the second occurrence of the name has a different spelling ('Harriett' vs 'Harriet'). So it looks as if one spelling was used in one file and the other spelling in another file. When you did the merge FH retained the second speling as an alternate name. If you go to the individual's Property Box and click More... next to the primary name this will open a dialog box where you can edit or delete the alternate name, or select it to make it the primary name.
If you want to keep both variants of the name but don't want the 'aka' to appear in diagrams you can select a different text scheme for the diagram or edit the existing one (make a copy of it and edit the copy as a custom text scheme). You do this via Diagram > Options > Text tab. Click the Hep button there for further advice if you need it.
What is a bit worrying is that you say it shows
Regarding the 'slow' problem I'm afraid I can't help there but no doubt someone else will have some suggestions.

If it sometimes shows the name of another ancestor this suggests that the merge may have incorrectly combined two differerent people in some cases. You would need to examine the individual record carefully to see whether this has happened. Does it show a mixture of facts from two people? Does the individual have more than one set of parents or spouses or children?the name of another ancestor and sometimes the same person

Regarding slow performance in Windows 10 try:
Right-click Start > System > Advanced system settings.
Then under Performance click the Settings button, and choose Adjust for best performance.
In every PC that I have seen updated to Windows 10 (including my seven year old Desktop), it has run faster under Windows 10 than the previous Windows version. So yours should be able to be improved.
BTW: Did you see the glossary:windows_10_upgrade_tips|> Windows 10 Upgrade Tips.

Thank you very much Mike for your help. I will give your suggestion a go.
Thank you also to Lorna. Worked a treat. I would not have found that without you. I am very grateful.

I agree Mike, and if possible, convert to an SSD also. One exception for me; I use custom with the Adjust for best performance. ; I tick one box: smooth edges for fonts. Otherwise my 1600*900 resolution becomes too fuzzy and faded for the small text.tatewise wrote:Regarding slow performance in Windows 10 try:

The migration from Win7 is the smoothest I've ever seen from a Windows product, having migrated 6 family laptops to W10 (and 5 to SSD's too!). Never had to reinstall any software, and have yet to have a BSOD on any of them in over one month now. (of course before doing this I do multiple image backups, though Windows has it's own undo).
