Adding lines to diagram

Post by susiewb » 20 May 2016 08:31

I have a couple of ancestors both with numerous siblings which makes the diagram very wide. I have been trying unsuccessfully to add lines to try and locate some of the siblings on a row underneath the others, hence saving a little space. Could you tell me if this is actually possible and if so, the steps to do it?
Thanks for any help.

Hi Susie.
Here are a number of suggestions that may offer a workable solution.
  1. See Wish List entry Ref 477 Show 'end of Branch' siblings vertically and add your Vote.
My comment there offers a workaround for that technique by using a Text Box for each set of siblings.
  2. In the Diagram > Options > General tab try setting Orientation: Left-right which often yields a smaller Diagram because siblings are stacked vertically.
  3. In your Top-down Diagram select Diagram > Enable Moving/Resizing, choose Box & Bar and tick ...within row.
This will allow you to move the sibling boxes into two rows as follows.
Move the cursor arrow head over the centre of a sibling box until it becomes a cross-hair.
Now left-click and drag the box down until the siblings either side move together above the dragged sibling.
Repeat this movement for each alternate sibling, or otherwise as preferred, until they are in two compact rows.
In some circumstances you may find it beneficial to untick ...within row.

Thank you for your help, Mike. It is always appreciated.

I have tried your third option which seems to look OK and does save a little space.
