Possible Bug in Copy & Paste Source

Post by Gowermick » 18 Apr 2016 08:03

In the process of moving to Method 1 for source/citations, I have been creating new Sources, combing Source and Text from source. After successfully creating the new Source, I copy it, then replace all the original citations, by deleting the original source/citation, then pasting the newly created source, a very simple and quick process.

But, halfway through replacing the originals, I found what I was pasting had changed, and I was now pasting an incorrect source!

For example, after successfully pasting source Census 1861 RG09 Piece 0313 Folio 108 Page 24 a few times, I then spotted I was pasting source Census 1861 RG09 Piece 1289 Folio 110 Page 01 instead!

I do not know where the incorrect source came from, but it is possible it was also a newly created source, from earlier in the session. The problem has manifested itself in two different sessions, once last night, then again this morning. I know FH has its own clipboard built in, so I am concerned that there is a bug in it somewhere.

NB Mike, your plugin worked fine for combining Source with Where within source, but I found a few rogues, where I had used Text From Source in error

This sounds similar to the problems you reported in this post: Possible Bug when Editing Notes (13378)
It's baffling as nobody else has reported this kind of problem. I suggest you report the problem to Calico Pie, referring to these two topics, and see if they can shed any light on the workings of the FH clipboard.

There are several different ways to perform those operations. Which are you using?
  • Click the Copy Citation or Paste Citation or X Delete Citation buttons in the Sources For pane.
  • Right-click a Source Citation and choose Copy Citation or Delete Citation from menu.
  • Select a Source Citation and press Ctrl+C or Ctrl+V or Delete key.
Most of those are very close to each other. Is it possible that you have accidentally used Copy instead of Paste?
Especially as there is no indication that Copy has been used by mistake when the clipboard is already full.

FH not only has its own clipboard, but also uses the Windows clipboard.
The Windows clipboard is text only representation of the FH clipboard.
After Copying a Source Citation, try Pasting it into say Notepad to see what I mean.
However, the Windows clipboard is only written by FH once, and can subsequently be changed with no effect on FH.

It would be interesting to know what is in the Windows clipboard, when the 'rogue' Copy/Paste occurs.

Lorna, I might well do that, but before I do, I want to make doubly sure it is not something I'm doing.

In hindsight, it may not be pasting new source at all, as I only spot the error after 6 or 7 pastes, and have to go back to correct the previous 5 or 6. It could be that although I click the 'Copy' button, it never actually recognised the click, and what I am pasting, from the clipboard, is the copy from the previous source, and is pasting the incorrect source from the get go, but I'm only noticing error after 6 or 7 pastes.

I do notice however, that when clicks on the Copy button on the Source pane of the Property box, the paste button becomes active on the Source pane as well as the Fact pane, so there is some dodgy coding somewhere.

I'll keep you posted if I find it still happening

Mike, our posts crossed, but see above reply to Lorna

Yes, maybe sometimes FH does not recognise the click of Copy button, and, as I said, there is no indication it has been recognised if there is already something in the clipboard and the the Paste button is already enabled.

The only foolproof solution I can think of is for FH to have a display somewhere of the current clipboard contents (both of them?) albeit perhaps a one line status summary title of the Fact(s) and Citation clipboard.

You are correct about the Paste Facts button being enabled in error whenever Copy Citation is used even via Ctrl+C. It happens even if the Facts tab is not displayed. That bug has been there since at least FH V3.0 because it exists in the free demo version. The converse does not happen. Certainly report that to Calico Pie.
