Source Records Window Column Customisation

Post by NickiP » 19 Feb 2016 21:29

I've had a search but can't find anything on this other than the normal way to customise the columns which I have already been using.

I have added the Media Image column to the Source Records Window, which obviously shows Source Record Media. I'm wondering if its possible to customise this so that it will show either Source or Citation Media please? Currently the expression used is the default %SOUR.OBJE[1]>%. Is there away of creating an expression so it will show either, depending on which has media added to it please?

I've had a look briefly at the issue of expressions in FH, but I find it a bit confusing in relation to what I'd like to achieve. :?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Nicola

Unfortunately Nicola that is not possible.

BTW: Your %SOUR.OBJE[1]>% column only lists the 1st Media item, and there could be %SOUR.OBJE[2]>%, %SOUR.OBJE[3]>%, et seq for multiple Media linked to the Media tab.

In Records Window Columns you can only show 1 to 1 forward links.
e.g.
For Source records:
A 1 to 1 forward link from Source to 1st Media record %SOUR.OBJE[1]>%
A 1 to 1 forward link from Source to Repository record %SOUR.REPO[1]>%
For Individual records:
A 1 to 1 forward link from Individual to 1st Note record %INDI.NOTE[1]>% or for a Fact %INDI.BIRT.NOTE[1]>%
A 1 to 1 forward link from Individual to 1st Source record %INDI.SOUR[1]>% or for a Fact %INDI.BIRT.SOUR[1]>%
A 1 to 1 forward link from Individual to 1st Media record %INDI.OBJE[1]>% or for a Fact %INDI.BIRT.OBJE[1]>% or %INDI.BIRT.SOUR[1].OBJE[1]>%
This very last one being a Citation Media case you are interested in.

The problem is that a Source record can have many Citations from many places as indicated by the Citations column.
e.g. A Census Source may be cited by several Census Events, Occupation Attributes & Birth Events, and each one could have one or more Citation Media.
There is no way in the Records Window to follow those reverse links back to all those Citations and their Media.
That is why there is a View > Record Links command and Plugins such as Where Used Record Links.
Currently, even that Plugin does not list the Citation Media but it could be updated to do so.

There is a good diagram that illustrates the structure.
Use Tools > Plugins > More>> > How to Write Plugins and in the Help window under Family Historian API examine Understanding the Data Structure.
The links between items can only flow forwards in the direction of the arrows.
What the View > Record Links command and Where Used Record Links Plugin must do is search every item looking for links to the Source records in this case.

Thanks Mike, suspected there wouldn't be. For me the fact it only shows the 1st media item isn't really an issue. All I have that column configured for is to double check I've linked media to the Source Records, not how many. Until recently the fact you can't check for Citation Media that way wasn't an issue as I wasn't using them, but with the updated facility under v6.1.3 for adding media to Citations I thought I'd make use of it. I do use your plugin "Where Used Record Links" but not to check for media anyway.

I'll just have to continue running a Narrative Report and check the Source section.

It looks likely that Citation Media will become more popular, so I plan to add Media to the Plugin Result Set.

I have looked at the Plugin, and it is easy to add Media counts, but not sure how best to list them.
As an example, assume that the where used tag is INDI.BIRT.SOUR or a Birth Citation.
Media can be linked to the SOUR Citation, and can also be linked to the parent Fact BIRT.
So the Plugin could simply count them all and list one number: 3
Alternatively, it could list the two numbers separated by slash: 2 / 1
Not sure which way to go?

I'm a little confused, but then some new medication is playing havoc at the moment so not unexpected.

Mike, could you elaborate please on how you are thinking of showing the Plugin results when you refer to media showing as "3" or "2/1" as I'm a little confused?

Personally, what would be helpfull would be where the Plugin is run against a particular Source Record, the result output showing the particular citations linked to the Source Record and an extra column in the results which shows if there is a media record linked to that Source Citation. Perhaps after "Data Ref Where Used" or "Field Where Used". I may be getting completely confused, not surprising in light of my above comment, but I get the impression you aren't talking about showing it in this result view. If you are, my apologies.

You have got exactly the right idea with an extra Media column showing the counts. I hope to post a prototype Plugin tomorrow.

Nicola, referring back to your original posting, I don't see why you need to add a Media Image column to the Source Records Window, because the default Pics etc column gives a count of Source Media already.

The ATTACHMENTS Where Used Record Links Plugin Version 1.0.1 Date 24 Feb 2016 below adds a Media column to its Result Set.

So when listing Citations for Source records the Media column lists values x / y where:
x = number of Media linked to the Fact or Record holding the Citation.
y = number of Media linked to the Citation where used field itself.

In general terms:
x = number of Media linked as siblings of the Field Where Used.
y = number of Media linked as children of the Field Where Used.

[EDIT: ATTACHMENT deleted as Where Used Record Links Version 1.1 is now in Plugin Store.]

I have to admit I'd not noticed the Pics etc colum and yes while it does show the count, which is useful, I like the Media Image column because it shows you the name of the first media file attached.

Thanks Mike I've just tried the new Where Used Record Links plugin and works OK.

Would it be possible though, as you have included Facts Media in the count as well as Citation media, for it to also show Source media please? I know these are visible when I select the Source Record from the Source Record Window from the Media Image or Pics etc columns, but it would be useful to see them in the plugin results view too rather than having to flick back to the Source Record Window, especially if a number of Source Records relating to a specific individual were selected to run the plugin against.

Nicola try this ATTACHMENTS Where Used Record Links Plugin Version 1.0.2 Date 25 Feb 2016.

It adds a Media column for the selected records where appropriate.

This latest version works very well, but I think it has revealed a bug in FH 6.1.4 – in the result set, if you double-click on an empty cell in a column where double-clicking on a non-empty cell jumps to the relevant field, FH crashes – "Family Historian has stopped working".

I cannot repeat that effect Peter, and I am running FH V6.1.4.
Does it happen on any empty cell, or only certain columns?
Is it only on rows where no links are found?
Does it happen for all types of selected record?

Thanks Mike, I agree with Peter that does work well.

I can't replicate Peter's error either assuming I'm reading the details correctly.

That said, when I select one of the Record Where Used cells and click focus, there is quite a delay in it executing that command and opening the Individual Record. Initially it appears to crash with a rotating circle appearing, but then executes the command and opens. I did notice it happening on the earlier version of the updated plugin (forgot to mention it) but I don't remember it occuring on the previous version I had installed, namely the one downloadable from the FH website.

Edit - it seems to be intermittant as didn't happen just now but has happened once before. I suppose its possible the autosave was running at the same time, it is a largish project.

Using the plugin with Sample Project Media Record [1] "The Munros" – double-clicking on the blank cell in the Frame Area column or any of the blank cells in the Exclude From column crashes every time. I see that the right-click context-menu options for the blank cells are greyed out, but double-clicking is apparently not properly disabled or ignored.

Peter, perhaps try re-installing FH, as I can get exactly that Result Set, but without any problems.

Nicola, I also cannot get the focus delay.

I think the focus delay may well have coincided with an autosave, its happened twice but can't generally get it to repeat.

I haven't re-installed FH, but I have re-booted Windows (7 SP1) for the first time since installing latest FH 6.1.4, and that appears to have cured the problem. :)
