Hi, I am trying to return to my research after a traumatic couple of years in my life when I abandoned it all. I have FH v4 and my PC has Windows7. I want to upgrade to Windows 10 but don't know if Family Historian will still work. Can anyone help please? Obviously I will take backups of all files.

Heather, could you please use User Control Panel > Profile at the top of this web page, and update Family Historian to your Version so it appears in the panel on the right of your posting, and we know which version you are using.

I would strongly advise against upgrading to Windows 10 at least until the new year. There have been many teething problems reported, that will hopefully be fixed in the next few months. The older your PC the greater the number of likely problems, unless the manufacturer has approved your model for upgrade to Windows 10, otherwise there may be device driver problems.

I am thinking of adding some Windows 10 upgrade tips to the Knowledge Base.

Calico Pie say that FH V3 to FH V6 all run under Windows 10.

Thanks for reply. Have updated to show my version. Will think carefully about Windows 10. Also wondering if there is any chance FH will have a version compatible with Apple computers as I may get a new one soon - or even ipad as I have one of those?

Thanks again for your prompt reply and the link. Interesting reading. I have decided to try updating my old-ish laptop to Windows 10 and see what happens. My PC is more precious so I will wait a while with that.

Speaking as someone who has been following the Windows 10 newsgroup websites since Microsoft released the beta test versions earlier this year, I would strongly agree with Mike when he says do not do the upgrade yet. There are still many problems with the W10 upgrade that even the techies are struggling to resolve or work around, and there are significant privacy issues being raised about W10.

You have until July next year to get the free upgrade. There's no disadvantage in sticking with Windows 7 for the time being.

What is confusing me Heather is you said you had a laptop and a PC. Presumably you only upgraded one of them. To me it would have been prudent to ensure they both had the same data, projects, documentation, etc, before upgrading either one of them.

Thanks for your replies to both of my posts. I won't post any more here after this but will concentrate on the newer thread. I wanted to just answer you first, though. I know, I know, I know .. I am kicking myself for my stupidity in not checking everything throughly first. I had already upgraded my laptop to Windows 10 with no problems at all but didn't have all my gedcoms on the laptop, just the ones I use the most and they weren't even completely up to date. In hindsight I am well aware how much time and anguish I would have saved by updating.
I had checked that I did have what I thought were complete copies of my Family Historian Projects folders on CD and flash drive but they were, in fact, my own folders of family history projects - not the programme - and I had labelled them badly. If only I had doublechecked them. There are a lot of "If Only"s at the moment, I can tell you.
