AS Fails to Open on install
I am in the process of reinstalling programs after upgrading my PC and have a problem with AS failing to open I cannot read the full message as it disappears too quickly. I have downloaded from FHUG and also tried a V5 download from prior to the upgrade both with same result, will not open. I am using Win10 just as I was before the upgrade and it is up to date with any updates. Also downloaded NET Framework 3.5, is it still relevant to Win10.
Any ideas

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
A bit more background might help.
What form did the upgrade take, e.g. what has changed and why?
Does everything else install OK?
Did you try installing AS before NET Framework 3.5 because I think AS may sort out what it needs by itself.
Try using a camera, smart-phone, tablet to photograph the error message and capture it.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
Basically everything has been replaced including a new C drive now an SSD but old HDD drive has been included as a secondary drive for data storage but still has old stuff on it. But as motherboard etc has been replaced OS doesn't function but I can get downloaded progs out of my old Downloads folder.
Why because I felt the urge
I haven't had problems with installing anything else. Most of it is done now.
Yes AS went on first only tried Net Framework because it failed.

Ancestral Sources has stopped working - windows is checking for a solution to the problem
- windows is collecting more info about the problem this might take several minutes.
It only took seconds and nothing else happened.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
Try two techniques in how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems as they can apply to any installed program.
(1) Try running AS in Windows Safe Mode as explained for Windows 10 in KB.
(2) Try the DEP fix as explained in Error: Family Historian Stopped Working.

Try renaming the Ancestral Sources folder in the root of your documents folder (e.g. add old on the end) and run it again and see if that makes a difference

Nick
I do not have such a folder, could that be because AS has not yet opened on this m/c?
I have also just uninstalled and reinstalled AS, no different.
Mike
I am on BT Netprotect / McCaffe So I tried disabling AV and Firewall first, no different. In safe mode AS would not open, warning message did not appear long enough to get a picture even.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
I was checking whether AS was having trouble with an existing settings folder but that doesn't sound like the problem.
Can you try running AS (so you get the error) and then type 'Event Viewer' into Cortana's search box and click to run Event Viewer and then have a look in the Application Event log. There ought to be an error message in there near the top. Please send me the text of that (Nick AT ancestralsources dot com).
Thanks

Keith, did you try the DEP fix?

Mike
In the DEP window the other option "Turn on DEP for Essential Windows progs and services only" is ticked on mine. So I did not change it.

I wonder if NET Framework 3.5 counts as an esential Windows service?
Try turning off DEP altogether, just temporarily.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
Sorry, I forgot you cannot just switch off DEP, so you must select the other option and Add Ancestral Sources.exe to the list.
Another thing to try is in Safe Mode uninstall and re-install AS by right-click on the installation file icon and choose Run as administrator from the dropdown menu, even if you are running as an Administrator.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
In DEP I selected the other option and the Ancestral Sources.exe file, but it would not accept it. message came up "You cannot turn on DEP for 64bit executables".
In Safe Mode I tried uninstalling and re-installing as Administrator but it didn't make a difference. I will try again tomorrow (later today) after opening a new account without Administrator privilege. Then go into Safe Mode select run as administrator and try again. Not confident it will make any difference though.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
Keith,
Had no problems at all installing Ancestral Sources in Windows 10, so this may not the answer, but just for elimination purposes, have you checked that the version of the MS.Net Framework 3.5 you installed and the Ancestral Sources version match, i.e. the .Net Framework Installer and Ancestral Sources come in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavours and the installations do need to match.

Keith, don't bother to try with a new non-Administrator account - it will not help.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
I'm in communication with Keith via email and am working with him to try to workout why he is having problems. I've certainly installed AS on Windows 10 without any problem and I've not had any similar reports so it is certainly an unusual situation.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
I've worked with Keith this evening and I think I can now explain this error.
When AS starts up, it checks the region settings of the computer so that it can attempt to set the correct default date format to either dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy.
Keith had his location set to 'English (Europe)' and I think this caused the .Net function I use to return an error 'Customized cultures cannot be passed by LCID, only by name'. I can see this being reported with other software with Windows 10 with various location settings.
Keith has now changed his location to UK and now Ancestral Sources starts up for him.
The next Ancestral Sources version will catch this issue when it occurs and just default to dd/mm/yyyy rather than crash. Thanks for reporting this Keith.

Re: AS Fails to Open on install
Thanks for your help Nick it was appreciated.
However I have to add that I did not select Europe, it is not actually an option under Region & Language. I can remember when installing my other software that in one instance the only option I could pick was Europe English, whatever that is! So perhaps that is when it was corrupted. There is no one more determined than me to select English or United Kingdom. Even to the point of not using the software if there is another option. Unfortunately that is rarely possible and we have to put up with using the corruptions.
Rant over.
Again, thanks for your help Nick and you Mike.
