Deleting a Fact Set

Post by janefrances » 04 Dec 2015 16:10

I've downloaded the Fact Set Military History for Property Box Tab and Wills and decided that I didn't need it after all. After following the instructions to delete the fact sets the tabs are still showing in the property boxes but a lot of the labels are missing, I'm just left with one or two that it wouldn't delete because there must be some information contained within them but I can't remember who! :?

Thanks in advance
Jane

You can make the tab invisible by selecting the small gear icon in the top right of the property box (menu), choose customize data entry. In the tab list drop down on the left side of the Customize Property Box window select the tab you wish to no longer see and unclick the enabled checkbox alongside.

Thanks David, this has worked. I did notice that under the customize property box more tab tasks there was a delete option, could I use this instead of hiding it? Didn't want to try this in case something awful happened as I haven't backed up for a while! :)

Jane, it seems that you not only downloaded the Fact Set but also the associated Property Box Tab:
fhugdownloads:contents:property_box_tabs_military_census_wills|> Property Box Tabs: Military and Census and Wills.
That explains how to delete the tab by using the Customize > More Tab Tasks > Delete Tab command that will never harm your GEDCOM database.

Hi Mike, Yes, I downloaded the fact set and the property box, I have followed David's instructions to hide the property box tabs for Wills and Military.

I carried out the above and it won't delete the <none> labels. I've deleted most of the labels for the Military and Wills plus the fact set.

Sorry Mike, I've got into a bit of a muddle with this one

OK Jane.

You have only dis-Enabled the Property Box Tabs for Military and Wills, so you need to use Customize again, select the Tab: Military top left and More Tab Tasks > Delete Tab to actually delete it, then repeat with Tab: Wills.

You have deleted all the Fact Type Definitions with their Fact Sets of Military2 and Death_or_Burial1 and maybe Electoral_Roll.

I suspect the <none> entries under Fact Set are nothing to do with any of the above.
The example of W.W.1 is an Attribute Fact in your GEDCOM database, but it has no Fact Type Definition.
So its Normal Time Frame, and narrative sentence Template are undefined.
It was probably there all along, even before you downloaded the Fact Sets and Tabs.
It may have been imported from another program ages ago?
Click on the Fact Set column heading, and all the <none> entries will rise to the top.

Now you have to decide what to do with them.
Either find all those Facts and delete them from your GEDCOM, or create a Fact Type Definition for each of them.

Let me know which you want to do?

Many thanks Mike, I've deleted the property box tabs for Military and Wills.

When I go to Tools, Fact Types I still have death or burial1 showing as an attribute.

I only have 2 <none> that's come up, and I don't want to delete them. I use to have Generations and Family Tree Maker (and a few others) before settling on Family Historian .

I don't want to delete them.

I think you mean that Death_or_Burial1 is still listed as a Fact Set.
If you no longer need any of its Event/Attribute fact definitions, then delete them all, just as you did for Militray1.

To create a Fact Definition for those two facts marked as <none>, select them in turn and click the Edit button.
You will be asked to confirm that you wish to create a new definition.
Choose to add to the Custom default Fact Set, or any other name you wish.

In the Fact Definition dialogue set the Normal Time Frame to whatever seems appropriate, it is most often Life.

In the Template you must design your narrative report sentence format.
(You can OK the Fact Definition dialogue, and come back at any time to Edit it.)
Look at another Fact sentence Template for inspiration via its Edit button.
Click Help and look at Template Codes for advice.
Click on <<Insert Code to add Template Codes, and click How to Use Advanced Features at bottom for even more advice.
Ask here if you cannot achieve what you want.
