Record ID no's on diag don't match narrative report

Post by JoGraham » 01 Nov 2015 13:08

Hello. I have Windows 8.1 and my problem is not repeatable using the FH Sample projects. The project I am currently working on has a number of illegitimate ancestors. When I produced an "Ancestors of" diagram, the numbers did not match the Record ID's shown in the narrative "Ancestors by Generation" report. The only way I can resolve this seems to be by adding in the unknown fathers as "Unknown Unknown" which is not a very elegant fix! Is there an alternative way of producing diagrams and reports where the numbers match? I was initially hoping to use the Ahnentafel numbers on the Diagram and Report which I hoped would mean they would match but had trouble applying that - are the Record ID's the same as the Ahnentafel numbers would be? I've been trying this for days and got myself in a state of confusion so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

You have almost answered your own question Jo.

Record Id numbers are different from Ahnentafel numbers.

The Narrative Report > Ancestors by Generation uses neither numbers by default, and are simply sequential numbers per Individual, but [Record Id] can be added via the Options > Main tab. The only way to get Ahnentafel numbers would be to add an Ahnentafel Attribute to each Individual with a suitable Sentence Template involving the =AhnentafelNumber() function.

The Outline Report > Ancestor Outline does use Ahnentafel numbers and [Record Id] by default.

I presume your Diagram uses a Text Scheme such as Names, Date, Ahnentafel Numbers but could easily be customised to show [Record Id] as well or instead.

An important thing to recognise is that Record Id are absolutely unique and consistently the same for each Individual in any context. Whereas, Ahnentafel numbers adjust depending on the root Individual chosen for the Report or Diagram.

Thanks, Mike. I can see now that the Record ID Numbers are the ones in [] AFTER someone's name and not the prominent ones that show BEFORE each name. Most confusing! Thank you :D
