I have bought a copy of FH v6, with a view to moving from Family Tree Maker. The convention I used on FTM was to change the surname of confirmed family members to CAPITALS, and all others remained in lower case. FH makes all surnames uppercase.
Is there any technique that will allow me to achieve the same result, perhaps a new custom fact?
I am also looking for a way to separate other trees, (not [yet] connected to my main tree. I have identified a number of separate families that I would like to retain in the same project.
I have tried to create a custom fact in which I could identify each family, but in the records view when I add the new fact and try to update it, it asks for a date and location.
Any advice will be most appreciated.
Regards
Allan

Re: One Name Study
Good question, this topic from 2009 is related, but I can't find any answer:
Surname Capitalization - a Third Way (6310)
On the one hand it usually makes life easier having the surname in caps, but in cases like McQueen, MacQueen, o'h'Obain, De'Orrell just confuses things. I suppose it just shows how "anglicised" the original Gedcom genealogists were. As it is usual to key Gedcom using lowercase letters, it would make sense to be able to show it that way.

Re: One Name Study
Welcome to the FHUG, Allen.
FH and GEDCOM does not force any upper/lower case conventions on any names or data.
What you are 'seeing' is the Tools > Preferences default option to Display surnames in upper case, but that option can be unticked and then surnames are displayed exactly as recorded in your GEDCOM database. You can also always see how the surnames are recorded by using the more... link next to the Name on the Main tab of the Property Box.
Are you looking for a way to identify unconnected sub-trees? FH automatically assigns a Relationship Pool number to each unconnected sub-tree. Use the View > Standard Queries > Search For Orphans to see those numbers in use. The only drawback is, if the sub-trees are reorganised, the numbers get reallocated. However, I believe the largest main tree will always be allocated the number 1.
Regarding the custom fact, please explain exactly what you mean by 'update', as I do not recognise the symptoms you describe.

Just to add to Mike's reply: you can add a column to the Individuals tab of the Records Window to display the Pool numbers. Right-click on any column heading and select Configure Columns. Scroll down to the bottom of the list on the left hand side and select <other>. Click > in the centre. Enter 'Pool' for the Heading and =RelationPool() for the Expression. Click OK. You can then use the up/down arrows to change the position of the new column. Click OK again.
Clicking on the Pool column heading will sort the records list by Pool number.

Re: One Name Study
How did I miss that option!! (I think I searched the help on capitalise!!), but as ever a few hints and wrinkles and reminders from the forum. However, as detailed in Surname Capitalization - a Third Way (6310) confusion must arise with different cultures naming conventions. I'm sure there are many discussions regarding that. I suppose another option would be to use different colours for forenames and family name(s?).
