Advice on importing from Relatively Yours 3
I also need some help with this. I have been using RY3 for years and am currently trialing FH6. None of my media came in but the titles of the photographs are there but with a blank square. I have only been using this program for a few days. Also what is the order in which you bring in new media, I think I am just going around in circles.
Not great with computers but I try.

Re: Advice on importing from Relatively Yours 3
Welcome to the FHUG Maz.
I have started a new thread for this topic, as I had not heard of RY3 before.
There are many useful pages of advice in our [kb]|[/kb] but initially can I refer you to how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and especially how_to:v4:understanding_projects|> Understanding Projects.
It sounds like you have imported/opened a GEDCOM file but all the links to the Media files are what we call 'broken'.
What commands did you use to get your GEDCOM into FH?
Use the command Tools > External File Links and give us some examples of the File Links file paths and file names.
Presumably there is a GEDCOM export option within RY3?
As part of the export does it give the option to include your Media (.jpg) files?
Do you know where those Media (.jpg) files reside in the Windows/RY3 filing system?
If we can work out where these Media files are, then it may be possible to bulk import them all into FH.

Re: Advice on importing from Relatively Yours 3
I have just started with FH and imported my gedcom from RY3. My main query is UDF relating to census records. In RY3 I used participants to link all the family members to the census so on import I have a lot of UDF items relating to the census. Only the head person has the census in their record (& it's not perfect). I'm wondering about the best way forward. Is it feasible to use the change any fact plug in for this? Otherwise if I re-enter the census using the Ancestral sources data entry will I end up with duplication in the head person? Or does anyone know a better idea? For example UDF results relating to 1911 Ireland census which has only head person + 2 daughters.

Re: Advice on importing from Relatively Yours 3
Hi Alison, welcome to the FHUG.
As I said before, I am not familiar with Relatively Yours 3.
I don't think the Change Any Fact Tag Plugin will help, because it only works on level 1 Fact tags and not the subsidiary tags you listed.
I suspect the way forward is:
Use the AS tutorials on the Family Historian Sample Project to become comfortable with what happens.
Finally, it is not clear to me how you derived your 'example UDF results', as they are not in format I recognise.
What FH commands or Plugins did you use to obtain those details?
It would be clearer to me if you posted FH screen-shots, or Gedcom file snippets.

- Use File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup (Gedcom Only) to preserve the current database.
- Use how_to:handling_unrecognised_data_fields|> Handling Unrecognised Data Fields to clean out the UDF.

Hi Mike
Thanks for your reply. I will work through your suggestions and use the sample project to practice first.
I copy pasted the info from running the plugin UDF list.

Re: Advice on importing from Relatively Yours 3
Hi Alison,
AH! I see now! Yes, that all makes sense.
It was the un-tabulated format that confused me. DOH!
That GEDCOM structure is so unusual that it is probably best deleted, and start again with AS.
One simple way is to find the Census Event on the Facts tab of the Property Box for Hugh O'BRIEN in the examples.
Then click the Delete Facts button in the toolbar below the pane.
If there are too many to use that method, then an easily created Query offers a short-cut to bulk deletion.
I will advise you how to create and use the Query.
Both techniques will completely delete the Census Event, its Date, Place, and all the subsidiary UDF.
What AS will do is create a Census Event for Hugh O'BRIEN and both his daughters.
It can also create Occupation Facts for the Gamekeeper and Scholar details.
It can also update Birth Events for all three with Date and Place details.
Each new or changed Fact will Cite a single Source record holding a transcript of the Census details.

Thanks Mike
I'm getting a much clearer idea of where to head. I made a query which shows I have 162 census facts so plenty of data entry to do & images to find & link. So if I can do the delete in a batch that may be quicker than doing one by one. Appreciate if you can give me tips on the batch delete as bit nervous not to delete whole records.
Appreciate your help.

Re: Advice on importing from Relatively Yours 3
OK, Alison.
I could create the Query for you, but I think it is a good learning exercise to do it yourself.
For general advice about Queries see the how_to:creating_a_query|> Creating a Query.
I advise you use File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup (Gedcom Only) just in case!
So start with View > Standard Queries > All Events.
Then in the Result Set tab click the Event column heading to sort alphabetically.
You will find all the Census events listed after Birth, Burial, etc.
Unfortunately, the Standard Queries do not support deletions and edits.
So, on Query toolbar top right, use right-hand Query Menu and choose Save As Custom Query.
Change the Query Name to say Delete Census and click Save button.
On the Columns tab, in left hand Fields pane, select Fact (event or attribute).
Now click the central > button to add it to right hand Columns pane.
Now we are ready to start deleting.
On the Query toolbar top right, click the left-hand Run Query triangular button.
In the Result Set tab click the Event column heading to sort alphabetically as before.
Scroll down to the Census events and note that the far right Fact column lists the details.
Select all these Fact cells for Census by selecting top one and then with Shft key held down select last one.
(i.e. The standard Windows method for selecting consecutive items.)
Initially you could just select a few if you don't want to delete all 162.
Only the Fact: Census cells should be selected, not the whole rows. (A bit like cells in a spreadsheet.)
With the cells selected, hit the keyboard Delete key to get a warning message.
If happy to go ahead then click OK.
This will not only delete the Census events but all the associated 'child' fields including the UDF.
You can now go and check the Individuals to see that the Census events have gone.
Also run the UDF List Plugin to check the UDF have gone.
If you are unsatisfied in any way, use Edit > Undo Delete Selected Data Item(s) or click Ctrl+Z before closing FH.
If you only deleted a few, you can return to your Query by using View > Custom Queries > Delete Census or whatever you named it.
