Hi all
I have found that many of my 'will' facts (as I call them) are identified as 'other*' in the 'sources for' box beneath which will be a an entry for E&W Probate etc. This will be due to the FTM origin of the GED.
Is there a simple way in which I can change this fact , either by individual or even better if all as a do once, to will ? Other than setting a new correct fact and deleting the old one.
30mins of scurrying around FH, plug ins and FHUG suggests there is no simple way. Simple to me is a right click 'change fact type' solution.
If there isn't I'll add it to my ever lengthening list of things to correct on a person by person basis when I retire
Many thanks
J

Thanks for reply. Didn't want to tediously list everything I skimmed but yes I sure did. Downloaded. Installed. Sat scratching head for 15mins as to how it worked then felt I was doing the equivalent of brain surgery with the capability of applying but a plaster ! To a lay person it was not obvious how I selected 'other' to switch to 'will'. No doubt it must be possible but I've come to appreciate that whilst I much prefer FH6 (to FTM/RM/Legacy) I am firmly a modern day driver ie: happy to use and equally happy not to give a care as to whats under the bonnet. Hence if its not a simple fix I've neglected to spot then for the moment I will just live with it and redo each erroneous fact in due course. Cheers J

If you use Tools / Fact Types in FH, you can establish what Fact Set "Wills" is in. Then, within the plugin select that Fact Set from the dropdown list on the "Source Tag Set" button. Then, under this in the dropdown against "Source Tag Name, you can select Wills. You then repeat the exercise using the "Target..." dropdowns to select the Fact Set and Tag you want to change Wills to. Then hit the "Change 'Source Tag Name' into "Target Name Tag Name'" button to invoke the change.
I spent quite a while getting used to the process when I moved my TMG data over, and ultimately found the plugin invaluable!

Unfortunately, Brent's advice is not ideal, as your other Fact probably won't exist in a Fact Set as explained below.
Did you try the Plugin Help & Advice pages?
It its defence, the Plugin looks a bit complex, because it offers many features.
I advise using File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup before using the Plugin, just in case!
In your case you are talking about Individual Records, so that is the Plugin tab to use.
The import from TMG has produced a non-standard Fact, and I suspect you have not created a Fact Definition for it, so select Source Tag Set: <Custom Facts> and then Source Tag Name: should offer your other Fact.
With Target Tag Set: Standard set Target Tag Name: Will.
Click the other to Will button and each change will be offered for confirmation.
If you are sure that every other Fact needs to become a Will Fact, choose Change all the Rest.
Having closed the Plugin, check your database, and if anything is unsatisfactory use Edit > Undo Plugin Updates.

Ah ha ! Thanks Mike.
That worked after a fashion.
I did exactly as you suggested selected 'other' and then (a nice surprise) rather than it plough on and do it, each event popped up for me to accept or skip. Fortunately as the FTM had typically presented a similar address for the probates I knew what to expect. So the first 6 entries popped up and I skipped them as they were clearly genuine other items and not wills (and ones I'll return to to sort). Oddly that was all that arose.
So I went back to settings > custom facts > and reviewed what was on offer under source tag name and spotted something call 'death and buriel1' !?! not something I ever consciously recall doing. Clicked that and presto the other box offered up 'other' and all the 'will' items popped up one after another with just a sprinkling of oddities where a passenger list upon connected to my FTM tree generated the cruise tour list bahamas etc...so I skipped them.
So that really was genuinely simple to do if not at first glance.
I was thrown a tad by the individual records tab headed christening to baptism and oddly on first view and tamper with settings I was lost looking for a 'go' or 'do it' button .
Only minor annoyance was one entry offered up made me think 'what on earth' so wanted to just check FH6 but as plug in was on FH6 was locked from use. Otherwise simples.
cheers

Glad that worked for you Jon. I am sure you will back to use it again and again.
When you got a tad thrown, did you think of using the Obtain Help & Advice button?
There on the Individual Recs tab it explains how the user interface works.
It is useful to know that the FTM import appears to create Custom Fact Sets such as death and buriel1.
Could you list the others that are offered by the Source Tag Set: droplist, because they may be useful to other FTM migrants, and if there is a standard set I could add them to the Help & Advice pages.
Unfortunately, all Plugins run in a modal window that must be closed before you can interact with FH itself, but now you know that you can do your homework on the Facts to be changed before running the Plugin. Remember to use View > Standard Queries > All Facts to get a list of every Fact that can be sorted to focus on your Fact of interest.

No worries. Not recognising 'TMG' I was on Family Tree Maker 2014 before the switch.
List under > individual > source tag set :
- standard
death and burial1
military
military2
then custom / defined and UDF tag
nothing pops up under family records (just standard) or other records tab (just defined tags).
Guess I hesitated clicking 'obtain help and advice' as I suspected 'obtain' led to phone number, e-mail or a hotline to your desk ! Having just clicked it I see its very helpful but the terminology remains daunting. As I said further up chain having tried to get record, source, repository, tags etc ad infinitum into my head (none of which I truly worried about in FTM land) I've taken a step back and stick to generally driving the beast without understanding whats under bonnet! I will use the plug in again though once I'm feeling confident. My GED is a mess and could do with a good seeing to by Mary Poppins !
Cheers

Sorry, I got mixed up with Brent coming from TMG and you coming from FTM. (I have corrected my previous posting).
Did you discover the advice in how_to:import_from_family_tree_maker|> Import from Family Tree Maker (FTM) about fixing Notes using a Plugin?
You may also find how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers worth studying. One of the topics included is Plugins that shows where the Help and Advice resides.
If your GEDCOM is a mess, then you would be wise to learn how best to tidy it up. Many users say they wish they had spent more time initially understanding the FH features, because armed with that knowledge they would have approached things differently. There are many tutorials, videos, guides, advice pages and addon tools to help you, plus of course this Forum.

Thank you, now corrected.
When you have found your feet, you can make those sort of corrections yourself, just like Wikipedia.
