Duplicate hell

Post by WeefordHoldcroft's » 10 May 2015 16:23

I seem to have two records for the same people in the focus window. No matter what I do I cannot ger rid of the duplicte as they both have the same id. See screen shot. Also there are duplicate people on the diagram yet not records. How do you merge these records. The help is aweful on Family Historian. It a great program if you can ever get your head around it. Roots magic is far better with help menus.

For some reason you have two Family Records for the couple Hames Holdcroft and Eliza Derry. Notice that in the Focus window for the first entry there are some marriage details (date, ages, place) but not for the second entry. The first entry also has four children, while the second entry only has two.

If the Family records tab is not already showing in the records window, use Tools > Preferences > Records Window and select Always show for Family records. Then in the Families tab of the Records window you should see two records for James Holdcroft and Eliza Derry. Select these two records and then use Edit > Merge/Compare records. Alternatively, if you are sure one of the records contains all the information on the family, just select the other record and hit the delete key.

Lorna's advice is absolutely correct. The clue that you don't have duplicate Individual Records is that they all have the same [Id] so the problem is the duplicated Family Records that often come about because you have added the same Spouse or the same Children into a Family for a second time.

We understand that James and Eliza do not have duplicate Individual records. But did you check for duplicate Family records, as described above?? It is these Family records that need merging.
