AnneEast wrote:Giving her age as 19 may have looked better to our modern eyes but she would have still needed permission from someone because the age of majority was 21 at the time. It was perfectly legal to marry at 14 at that time so why lie about her age? I have seen marriages of Minors that say "with the consent of friends" in the absence of a father. If she was Catholic she may have been known personally by the Priest so even less likely to lie, I would have thought. I do think you need to find and eliminate all the other candidates for Mary Ann.

Anne,

It was 12 for females and 14 for males at this time.

Okay I think I will add all the info that I sent to my mentor and see what you all think, she is dealing with a very sick Husband and if two sets of eyes are better than one then hope fully many are better than two. Here is what I sent her in an email last night.
I received the Marriage License yesterday!!! Okay but it added to my questions!!! I am going to type out what I already ”knew” and then what I think I am seeing from the document. I am going to attach the documents so you can check my interpretation and hopefully correct it or add to it. I posted the two Marriage records to FHUG but no one has responded yet.

The first two documents you have already gleaned data and sent me, but I want to add my interpretations so you can look at all six together as I am.

First Document that I had is the 1885 Iowa Census;
• Name = Mary Ann Tague, this is her second married name as she had married James Tague
• Age = 31, this means her DOB is sometime between 1854 & 1855 (Iowa census was completed with data as of 01JUN1885)
• Born in = England
• Married to James sometime before 1882 due to Daughter Lillian Tague being 3 in the census
• First Married Name is Fallon due to census listing Mary Fallon age 14 (my 2nd GGma), Thomas Fallon age 10, and Joseph age 9. This to me says that she Married Mr. Fallon sometime before 1871 because 1885-14=1871.

Second Document is 1900 US Census (Omaha, Nebraska completed 10Jun1900)
• Name = Mary A Tague
• DOB = June 1855
• Age = 44
• Married for 19 years so that would put marriage sometime between 1881 & 1882
• Children = 10 born, 7 living
• Born in = England (as were both here parents)
• Daughter is listed on this one also…

Third Document is 1910 US Census (Omaha, Nebraska completed 16Apr1910)
• Name = Mary A Tague
• Age = 53
• Widow
• Children = 5 born, 3 living
• Born in = England (but parents Father born in England, and Mother in Ireland)
• Daughter and Son listed although they have Thomas P Fallon listed as Tague???

Fourth Document is Marriage Record from Church (in Latin) Already Attached to this thread
• Name = Mariam Annam Brannam (Latin for Mary Ann Brannan)
• Residence = 12 Beau Street
• Groom = Thomam Fallon (Latin for Thomas Fallon
• Residence = 24 Carneau Street
• Father of Groom = Michaelis Fallon (Latin for Michael Fallon)
• Witness 1 = Jacob Brannam (Latin for James Brannan) could this be a relative?
• Witness 1 Residence = 15 6 pie Street (what the heck is this address)
• Witness 2 = Maria Bisset (Latin for Mary Bisset)
• Witness 2 Residence = 10 Beau Street (her neighbor???)

Fifth document is Christening record of Michael Joseph Fallon
• Name = Mariae Annam Fallon/Brannon (Mary Ann Fallon/Brannon)
• Spouse = Thomae Fallon
• Godfather = Jacobas Fallon (James Fallon) could this be spouses relative?
• Godmother = Maria Churchill (is her name translated to Mary or just Maria since no e at the end)

Sixth document is the Official Marriage License that I just received Already Attached to this thread
• Date = 24Nov1869
• Name = Mary Ann Brannan
• Age = 19 years
• Groom = Thomas Fallon
• Age = 27 (or could that be a 29)
• Occupation = Plumber (in 1869???)
• Residence = Cazmeau Street (was wondering about the street name on the church record)
• Groom’s Father = Michael Fallon
• Occupation = Plasterer
• Witnesses James Brannan & Mary Bisset

Okay, the biggest conundrum is that her DOB per the 1900 census is Jun 1855 which would make her 14 at the time of her marriage to Thomas Fallon. The two other Census records have her age as incorrect according to FH in the 1885 census she should be 30 (not 31) and in the 1910 census she should be 54 (not 53). Could the 14 vs 19 be a transcription error or possibly she lied about her age? Women in my family tend to look older once we hit puberty up until about our mid 20’s and then our aging appears to slow.

Also I noted that the number of children in 1910 is wrong, I have at least 7 children listed in the two separate census records so that would make the 10/7 correct not the 5/3 as listed in the 1910 census. The question this raises is have 4 of her children died by 1910? I know that Mary T and Thomas P are still alive since they are on the census but who else is still alive? I have a WWI draft Card for James Patrick Tague, and Thomas P’s death record 28Aug1944. Oh and I have their dates of immigration as 1881 & 1883 according to the 1900 Census but then 1880 & 1882 on the 1910 Census. I have that manifest which looks like the right one for the kids except that it has M A Fallon listed as a Spinster when she should have been married and recently given birth (Ship landed 22Aug1883 but Daughter Lillian Tague DOB July 1882), could M. A. Fallon actually have been a relative with the same initials? Also M. A. Fallon is listed as being 29 on the manifest but Mary Ann would have been 27… I am thinking that they spoke with Mary T during the 1910 census do you notice that they started to write the house number by her name and there is an x in front of her name. In the 1910 census they probably spoke to either James Tague or Mary A Tague, although Mary T McCain was also at home during the interview.
I will have to add the other documents to my next post.

Tim, this must be one of the 3 deceased children she has listed on the 1900 US Census, as I don't have him going to the US with the rest. Thank you for another clue. I actually just found a Death Register listing for Francis James Fallon Sept 1878 age 0!!! :D

Should I start new projects in FH to eliminate the other Mary Ann Brannan/Fallon's?

You don't need to start a new Project, just enter the separate tree into your main Project.
Whatever it proves one way or the other, it is useful evidence to retain in your Project.

I think the strange address on the Latin Marriage Register is 15 Opie Street.
Look at how the O is just like the O in O.S.B. after the priests name, that I thinks stands for Ordo Sancti Benedicti (Order of Saint Benedict).

Entirely up to you if you feel that entering data formally into FH would help - but personally, I usually end up just writing these alternatives up in note form in FH as a shared note record - not necessarily because I want to share them but just to distance them from your "proper" person.

I wouldn't get too worried about Ages/Years varying between census as they can do that a lot.
They only way to be absolutely certain is to get copies of Birth/Baptism/Marriage/Death/Burial entries and even then the ages can be out by a fair bit.

How sure are you that Lilian Tague is the Daughter of James Tague/Mary Ann Fallon (Nee Brennon) and not a daughter from a previous marriage of James.

Regarding the Number of children born/alive discrepancy would suggest that on the 1900 Census she put for all the children she had with both Thomas Fallon and James Tague and on 1910 Census is just the ones she had with James Tague. If this assumption is correct the would suggest that she had 5 Children with Thomas Fallon and 5 with James Tague. Without knowing which children by which father had died by 1900, would be impossible to work out how many more had died by 1910.

Hope this makes sense.

As a small aside, I notice you are questioning the occupation 'plumber' in 1869. There have been plumbers for 100s of years the name meaning originally 'working with lead'. Lead water pipes and lead window glazing were part of the job. My gggrandfather was a plumber and glazier on the 1861 census.

Colin, yes I was aware the girls could marry at 12 ...... hence my sentence which said it was legal to marry at 14! :?

Ergh, I am getting very frustrated right now, and may need to walk away from this branch for awhile...

I decided to try and find out what she put down on her second marriage certificate, since I know for sure that is her. I reached out to a gentleman in Crawford County Iowa where I have her second Husband listed on the Census a year before they supposedly married. He was a gem and actually searched the courthouse records first thing this morning (I sent him an email last night via a website I found). Unfortunately the only thing he found was the Marriage license for her Daughter's (my 2x Great-Grandmother) first marriage. He even searched to see if he could find out why my 2x Great-Grandfather died 2 years after they were married (he was 34).

Okay I am stuck again...

Tim I Think you were on the right track!!! I asked the gentleman in Crawford County if searching for the children of the second marriage might produce any leads... he didn't think so because the Maiden name didn't match. It matches your tree if she used here Step-Father's name as her maiden name!!! I am so excited!!! I have seen things in different search engines with Mary Ann Fratchem that matched except for the last name... now I need to go back and look again.

Or do you all think I am wrong? This is a late entry record, possibly when she went to get a Passport like my Grandmother did when she was in her 40's (she was a home birth). I am attaching the Birth form he filled out from the record and quoting his email for you all to review and guide.
Wonderful Gentleman from Crawford County, Iowa wrote:As for help from the children's birth records, again I would state that being as far as they were from the court house (about 14 miles) in the horse and buggy day, the odds of finding births recorded prior to 1900 is rare. So as to be sure I did again visit the recorders office and checked on birth records and there was none in the index for Tague found in the 1880 to 1906 book. Being a local researcher there are a few other items known to be found within the vault and I did check a delayed birth book. To my surprise there is one record for the surname Tague and I believe it fits the first child listed in both the 1885 and the 1900 census for James and Mary. A Lillian Ann Tague was born in Crawford County on 19 February 1882. I will attach a transcribed copy of the record on a sheet I use for my own research. All the data from the book is shown on the form but not all the lines on the form had information in the original book. If you were to seek a certified copy for yourself I believe you would need to go through the state office in Des Moines as although many of the counties have a delayed birth book the state regulations do not allow them to offer copies. Go figure.

As for helping your quest, I do not think Lillian's record will help, BUT it may raise another question as the name shown for her mother does not fit with names you offered unless she was not totally aware of how to spell her mothers maiden name.

There was one further name of interest which I did notice in the deaths and that was another man by the name of James Tague, also born in Ireland, but he died in 1914 and his birth is shown as being much before your James, in Oct of 1843.

WooHoo!!! I found a Christian Name for my 4x GGma, Susanna was born in Newry Ireland in 1827! I also found that she moved from Ireland to Liverpool sometime between the birth of her son Bernard Brannan around 1845 and the birth of my 3x GGma Mary Ann Brannan around 1846. I found a Census record showing this in 1851. Oh and by 1851 she was a widow.
These finds came from finding the name Fradsham on several documents of Mary Teresa Brannan's other children. They used Fradsham as their Mother's Maiden name. This led me to a census record from 1861 which had Susanna married to a Matthew Fradsham with 4 new children but no Bernard (he would have been 16). According to the ages of the new children they were probably married sometime before 1856.
I am attaching the 2 census records, if any of you can find any more info I would be VERY thankful!

Oh My Goodness! As I was cropping the records so that they would be small enough to attach I see that her sister's were listed on the 1851 record!!! Is that possibly her Maiden Name, Cllaghan?

Mary and Elizabeth are both recorded as "not married". That, and the fact that they both have the same surname, would indicate that Cllaghan is their maiden surname. Their relationship to the head of the household, the widow Susanna Brennan, is given as "sister". From that I would say you can reasonably conclude that Susanna's maiden name was Cllaghan.

I just did a quick search on Ancestry out of interest. There was a Susanah CLEIGHAN (same pronounciation as Cllaghan) enumerated in the 1841 census of England. She was living in Maguire Street, Liverpool and 14 years old (i.e. born about 1827). She was living with:

Jas. (James) CLEIGHAN, age 40, born in Ireland
Susanah CLEIGHAN, age 45, born in Ireland
Mary CLEIGHAN, age 12, born in Lancashire
Easter CLEIGHAN, age 9, brn in Lancashire

I've saved a copy of the image in case you don't have the subscription to access that. Let me know if you need it.
