Program crashes when merging and editing places at same time

Post by baw » 28 Jan 2015 14:09

I apologise if this is not the right forum for this, I looked at the FH site, and here but could find nowhere better. If wrong, please move it.

Anyway...

The bug can be reproduced in the sample project.
Tools->Work with Data->Places...

pick two places to merge.
Merge
Now, in the new window, choose one, but before confirming the merge, double click on the chosen place to edit it. Do so.
Now, on confirming the merge with select, the program crashes.

V6, on PC running W7

Yes I can reproduce this. However I would always edit the Place before or after the merge, and would not expect to be able to edit in the middle of the merge.

Having said that, anything that can cause FH to crash is a hazard as it risks losing unsaved data, so perhaps Calico Pie should be told about it.

However I would always edit the Place before or after the merge, and would not expect to be able to edit in the middle of the merge.
But why not?
This all cropped up when I was persuaded to clean up my places/addresses as a result of trying to use the new map facility.
I found a number of times where I had a number of almost duplicate places such as
Small hamlet, large town and
Small hamlet, county
and wanted to merge as
Small Hamlet, large town, county

Editing on the fly, so to speak, looked useful.
perhaps Calico Pie should be told about it.
Who tells Calico Pie? This is where I came in as I could find nowhere obvious on their site.

baw, I think that you are expecting too much, considering the scenario, basically you are trying to do 2 updates on the same thing at the same time, however perhaps FH should not let you do it and block the second action. Might be worth mentioning to Calicao so they stop us trying to do it.

trying to do 2 updates on the same thing at the same time
....is probably a bad thing, I agree.
Good programming wouldn't have allowed me to do it , but it's a very good program on the whole so I'll forgive them.

I'll send an email to calico; thank you for the address.
