* Importing from TMG

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Importing from TMG

Post by Doug Adams » 12 Jan 2015 16:26

Help, One idiot question, I'm afraid. I have all of my TMG projects on a desktop/Windows XP. I have just loaded Family Historian 6 onto a Laptop / Windows 7. I transferred (or thought I had) one of my projects *****_PJC from the old PC to the newer PC by sending myself an e-mail with this as an attachment. On the Laptop I saved it to 'Downloads'. Going through the FH6 Project Window / New Project the file was located and seemingly captured. Now, when I load the Project Window I see listed the Sample Project and my ***** file but, when I open the ***** file, it is empty. How should I have done this, please? Many thanks Doug Adams

The best way to move your Projects is to copy the WHOLE family historian Projects folder from the old computer on to USB stick or External hard drive and copy that over the Family Historian Projects folder on the new one. Alternately create Full backups for each Project and use the File Restore option to restore them on the new computer.

Jane, Thank you. Are you saying that I copy the TMG Projects File onto external storage (I can do that) , connect the external storage to my Laptop (I can do that) and then, within FH6 will I find a projects file into which I copy the entire TMG projects file contents, or just individual files. Will I have a compatibitlity problem between TMG Projects file and Windows 7? Thank you Doug Adams

Jane, I looked at the Knowledge Based link you gave me, but that seems to cover transferring TM fror one piece of hardware to another, not transferring from different software ... or I didn't read far enough. Doug Adams

Just copy over the whole Project and then use the New Project Option in Family Historian to import TMG into a Family Historian Project.

Take a look at how_to:import_from_tmg|How to import from TMG

If you encounter errors in the witness import, Calico are aware of the problem and are working on it.

You will need to import each TMG project into a new FH project.

Jane/John, Thank you. I'll let you know how I get on later this evening. Very kind of you both. My concern, which is probably something I did wrong, is that I did import one file through this process and it is listed in FH6 on the Laptop but it has no contents. Watch this space. Doug Adams

Doug, a TMG Project is not just one file, but a whole set of database files.
I suggest you copy the entire The Master Genealogist v9 folder.

Importing from TMG

Jane, Thank you. It didn't take that long, once I'd read the instructions you pointed me to.
All my TMG projects, via external storage, are now safely within FH6, and re-backed up
on the same external storage. I can start playing now! Doug Adams
