Place List > Find - any tricks for using this?

Post by jimlad68 » 02 Jan 2015 22:21

Toolbar > Tools > work with data > Places > Place List > Find

I have always found the "Find" box wanting. Perhaps I am doing something wrong but I have searched the help high and low?

It only ever seems to find PLACe records that begin with the search, never elsewhere in the comma separated record, even if sorting is done on a different row. Even with reverse display order it still shows the same.

Are there no * ? AND OR etc? I know the new Records > Places tab has a better filter, but this is not much use when filling in a fact place.

Sort columns - I can't find a way to sort on more than 1 column.

Your comments seem to be valid Jim.

The Help from the dialogue box does not mention Find at all!

Jim,

I agree. It was the same in version 5 and I always thought it would be nice to have a better search function. As far as sorting on more that one column, I wish FH allowed this in all of its lists, including on the records window.

Bill, I think you will find that multi-column sorting is supported in the Records Window and Query Result Set.
You just need to click on the column headings in ascending order of priority.
e.g.
If you want Individuals sorted primarly by Lifedates and then by Name, then click on Individual Records column head first, and then on Lifedates column head, remembering to hold the Alt key to reverse sort.

See Wish List item Ref 524 Tools Place List better Find and Column Sorting.

Mike,

I didn't know that. I guess this is backwards from what I thought would happen. I thought you would click on the highest order sort column first and then on the next level and so on. This actually works great. Wish I had learned this a long time ago. :D

Thanks!
Bill
