Flags tab on property window

Post by British Kiwi » 26 Dec 2014 02:10

Hi

I am having fun exploring FH6 and I know I saw somewhere that you could add a tab to show all the flags. I have added a tab for a To Do list but I can't find the flags property to add. Do I use the custom attribute and add each flag separately?

Thanks
Melanie

Quick answer Yes. Plus of course you can see all the set ones on the All tab.

Merry Christmas Melanie,

As you have only recently upgraded from FH V3.1.2, and successfully adopted the V4 Project structure, you may not realise that another new V4 feature often eliminates the need to manage Record Flags.

Record Flags are most often used to add Icons to Diagrams, etc. Since FH V4 the Diagram Options > Boxes > Conditions allow Expressions that can often be substituted for Flags. Then you may never need to set/clear Record Flags ever again.

See how_to:using_flags_and_icons_and_expressions|> Using Flags and Icons and Expressions for details and examples.

Merry Christmas to you too Mike. I have never used icons on my diagrams before but looking forward to using them. I had read that flags are mainly redundant and am hoping to clear them down. I am doing a bit of a data cleanse so most of them are for that purpose so accessing them from the property window will make things easier.
However you might be able to help streamline some things. I have a flag for my mum's side of the family and my husband's. This isn't for diagrams as I know I can easily colour code them. I was running queries to see which censuses I needed to look for and mum is french so didn't want her family popping up. I sometimes want to exclude or focus on darren's family which can be hard as his surname is also my great grandmothers (so far not related). I am slowly working my way through the new features so I can thoroughly use FH.

You have so much to investigate, such as plugins:index|> Family Historian Plugins.

Among them is Lookup Missing Census Facts which can be restricted to All the Ancestors of a chosen person, so choose Darren or his father or mother, and it automatically excludes you maternal side.

Also there are functions such as =IsAncestorOf() which can be used to isolate branches of your family.

I'm loving the plugins and have now downloaded it. I did a test run and I'm not sure if I have run it wrong. I did a test for Richard Stephens b. c,1795 in Kingsand. I have a census for 1841-1871 and he died 1881. I ran the plugin and it came up with links for 1831 & 1841. I had a look at my data and the only difference I can see is that the 1841 census I have recorded is for a family with his wife whereas the others I have recorded them on his own. Have I done something wrong?

1831 is probably one of the fragments for a very small area and there are ways to exclude them.

1841 ignores your Census (family) Events, which we usually advise against using, because they imply the Children are included in the Census, when they may not be.

I didn't realise that. I have always used the family for husband and wife and then a separate one for each child.

Is there a way to convert all my census family events to individual events?

It is not easy in FH itself, but quite easy using a Plugin, so try the attached.

Remember to make a Backup before running the Plugin, just in case.
Review the results, and if not acceptable, use Edit > Undo Plugin Updates to reverse all changes.
