Outline descendant reports

Post by wulliam » 13 Dec 2014 17:00

Hi,

I'm trying to find a way of generating a report which will list for me 3 (or perhaps 4) generations of names but without any extra details such as dates or names of spouses...this last requirement particularly being needed for the final generation listed.

I've got as far as this under my own steam:
Image

The first family shows no spouses simply because I haven't entered any - the second has the spouses getting in the way of what I want to consider.

If it was possible to also distinguish between males and females at the same time (by bold type face for males, say) that would be even better. Removing the surnames would also be useful.

I'm constantly amazed by what FH is capable of - this would make searching for naming patterns an awful lot easier!

Thanks for reading,
William

Does the report have to be indented, and is the line of descent important?

If the answer is NO to both then a Query will give you close to what you want.

The attached Descendant Names Query lists the descendant Generation number, the Sex, and the Forenames starting from any chosen Individual.
If that is not exactly what you need, then there are slight variations possible.

Alternatively, a Plugin could give you nearer to what you want, but the only way sex could be differentiated is by using all UPPERCASE for one and all lowercase for the other.

Thanks Mike - your description looks promising. The direct line is irrelevant for this, and the indents I can live without.
I've installed the query successfully but when I try to run it an error message is produced: "File is not a valid Family Historian Query file"...am I doing something wrong??

William,

I had a similar problem during beta testing and found that the read-only attribute was set for the file.

You might see if that is your problem as well.

Hi Bill,

I've checked that and, after right-clicking on the downloaded file the properties section shows the read-only box clear rather than ticked. Also I'm using v5, not v6 - don't know if that makes any difference?

Hi William,

Very strange. I just downloaded and installed the query and it runs fine for me in version 6.0.0.5.

Not sure what is going on. Maybe Mike can come up with a solution.

Sorry, it was my mistake. I created it in FH V6 instead of Wulliam's FH V5.
We are going have to be very careful about that in future, because FH V6 Queries, etc, etc are encoded in Unicode UTF-16.
We may have to finish up with two versions of each download

It is possible to open the Unicode UTF-16 Query file in Notepad and then save it with Encoding set to ANSI.

Agreed, Peter, but it is an extra step that most of us will forget to do from time to time.

I'm back with another related question...can I make the sex of the individual appear in an outline descendant report? I've been trying various approaches and nothing works :(

Thanks again!

The simple answer is 'No'.

The only possible way would be to create a Custom Attribute such as Gender and add that to the Individual Events/Attributes list.
But then you would have the challenge of setting each Gender Attribute value to the Sex setting for every Individual.

A Plugin could do it, but if you were to venture into Plugin writing, then you might as well make it create a Query Result Set or a simple text file Report structured exactly the way you want.

OK - at least I know. I think I'll head into pasting into a spreadsheet as that's what I understand best.
Thanks anyway!
