V6 Fails on TMG direct import

Post by JohnLiddle » 09 Dec 2014 10:47

I have downloaded and installed V6.

I attempted a direct import from TMG, but the process fails part way through the "Import Witnesses" step.

Is there a log file I can look at which might give a clue as to where and why there is a problem?

Using FH6 trial version

First time of trying a TMG import, process stops at step 10 (Importing witness information) (1/1870) with message -
"Family Historian has stopped working".
This problem also reported on Rootsweb FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS site.
I believe FH support working on it, is this correct?

I have the same problem and it looks at the same place in the step 10 so would it be a particular type of witness?
It seems I have about 2000 witnesses

An update - I have passed my database to support at Calico Pie and they have been able to reproduce and confirm the problem.

The matter has now been handed over to the program developers.

Same here. Fails on step 10 Witness import. Program crashes.

Direct import fails (Windows simply says FH has stopped working) on step 10 for me too; 25/600 witnesses.

Mine too - failed three times importing 19306 witnesses, but always at a different point in that step. I was really looking forward to trying FH out over the holidays as a suitable alternative to TMG, but if I can't get the import to work I'll have to keep looking.

Just to Quote Simon Orde from the TMG Refugees list:
The first thing to say is that we've had several reports of people saying
that FH6 crashes when you import witness information. We will be
investigating this and will release a fix for it (and any other TMG import
problems) as soon as possible.

Just wanted the people at Calico Pie to know that I had the same problem; and I hope they can find a solution. In the meantime, I'm still going to play with the trial version before deciding to migrate to Family Historian from TMG.

I have done a number of imports (both Direct and Gedcom) from my TMG project (as I'm still tinkering with data / setup before a "final" import) and I have seen my Witnesses in FH (viz. the import process did not fail for me). Import has been undertaken from both TMG 9.04 and 9.05, so it may be specific types of witnesses or something more obscure.

You may be one of the lucky ones - I think the majority of TMG direct importers fall in the 'witness hangs v6' camp - certainly I do, at about 10% of witnesses supposedly processed.

v5 is useless to me as it doesn't import much, and v6 is just useless.
Calico Pie need to get a fix out quickly, or TMG users will lose interest and look elsewhere....

I've got my TMG V8.08 project totally scrubbed, lots of useful Custom Facts to make the migration to FH as smooth as possible, and motivation to get serious with FH. Only problem is that my trial version of V6 that is about to expire and I'm at a dead-end.

Where to from here? Unless the Direct Import problem is fixed I will have to reluctantly look for another contender to replace TMG. Is there any definite plans for a Direct Import fix?

Thanks ... John.

IMO: Calico Pie intend to fix most direct import problems, but the Christmas/New Year break will have slowed development.

Best to ask them directly via support at Family Historian.

John

If you do contact support and get an update could you post their response here as I guess that there is quite a number of TMG users waiting for a fix to the problem who would be interested.

In http://www.family-historian.co.uk/support/faq-tmg Calico Pie say:
We urge TMG users to try out the import yourselves, with your own data, and let us know if any important data is excluded (email support@family-historian.co.uk).
So why don't you take up their invitation and all E-mail them from your particular perspective.

Just got the trial version of FH v6. I have the same problem at the witness import section no. 10 - "FH has stopped working" . I have TMG 8.08 and windows 7 pro 64 bit. No part of the project gets imported to FH, yet it appears on the project list
Look forward to getting a solution

I think, Mike, that we all have the same problem which has been acknowledged - See Jane's note above on 13th December. All we want to know is a possible timescale, unless you are suggesting that a flurry of messages to support will speed the process.

Per Mike's suggestion I have emailed Calico Pie with as much information as I have, and an offer to forward the offending TMG project file if that would help. I'm sure any response will get distributed pretty quickly given the level of interest :-) but will forward anything I receive.

Cheers ... John

I hope Calico Pie are going to extend the trial period of the TMG import failures, that downloaded V6 shortly after its release.
Will email them regarding this.

I've just downloaded the minor upgrade to version 6 and while I can do an import direct from TMG it doesn't seem to import the witnesses so I guess it's one step at a time but it's getting there so I now need to get used to navigating the program.

@rich. I have used this V6.0.1 for a direct import from TMG and the witnesses are there.

When you look at the list of Facts for a person do you see any facts with 3 blue dots joined by two lines in the "More" column?

If so go to a person where you know an event in TMG has a witness. Note the person and event. Find the same person/fact in FH V6 and single click on the fact. Then click on the little cog icon with the down arrow by it. A little drop down box appears with "Witnesses", click that and you should see the same witnesses as in TMG.

The Witness should also have the same fact in their view.

Hope this helps

Unfortunately the "witnesses" is greyed out. Now I wonder is this because I label my witnesses as in a census as daughter, son, nephew father in law etc.

@Rich. Not sure why you are having a problem. Attached is a screen shot following a direct import from TMG. You can see that I have my witnesses with son/daughter for example. (you may have to scroll the screen shot up and down to see the witnesses)

Are you running 6.0.1?
When you do the import does it complete correctly?

V6.0.0 did have a problem where it crashed when trying to do a Direct TMG import, (at the point of importing witnesses) but when you went back into FH the project was there but it wasn't complete.
