Relationship Reports

Post by craigmollekin » 16 Oct 2014 06:55

Hi,

It would be nice to have a function to display relationships in a graphical tree form but through direct lines only.

The current report form is acceptable but not very good (and not graphic). The graphical relationship function is pretty much useless if trying to print it as it would require many (scores, hundreds and maybe thousands sometimes) sheets of paper and probably on an industrial kind of printer if the relationship is distant.

The TNG PHP website version of a graphical relationship report is a good example of this should be achieved.

Displaying how two people are connected, in a simplistic way, is a basic requirement in my opinion and it is frustrating how Family Historian handles it in such a cack-handed way.

Craig, it would help if you could be more specific about the features you mentioned.

Which "current report form"?
Do you mean Ancestor Outline Reports?

Which "graphical relationship function"?
Do you mean Tools > How Related or Diagram > Family Connection Mapper?

If you only need direct ancestors have you tried View > Fan Charts ?
These can be customised just like any Diagram to show the details you need including Relationship to File Root, etc, and are quite compact.

Can you post a screenshot of the TNG report so we can see what we are missing?

Hi,

Many thanks for your replies.

Mike, I do mean the 'Tools > How Related' report.

I just wish it could be possible to produce a concise and succinct relationship diagram without lots of time consuming faff.

Valkrider, attached is a diagram illustrating how it is is done in T.N.G. (2007/2008 anyway) :-)

AH! That does help us understand what you are after.
In your original posting you mentioned "through direct lines only", which I took to mean direct blood ancestors or direct blood descendants, but your TNG example suggests any direct relative including via marriage, not just direct blood lines.

This is almost identical to Simplified Graphical Display for How Related Tool (10856).

FH V6 now allows you to Hide Spouses or Hide Siblings or Hide Spouses & Siblings and achieves a display similar to the TNG display, so this request has been satisfied and can be closed.

See also Diagram of Direct Line (12660).
