* AS 4.1 and .Net Framework 3.5

I can't see this listed anywhere as a problem so wonder if someone can advise me what I am doing wrong.

Having upgraded my computer memory and reinstalled Win 8.1 I have downloaded AS 4.0.1 and installed it. On running the program I am advised that AS needs .Net Framework 3.5. Win 8.1 offers to download and install this program and searches for the files. It then reports that the program cannot connect to the internet. So I check with my browser that I can go to a web page, which I can. Then I go direct to the Microsoft download page for .Net Framework 3.5 and click the Download button. The program downloads and appears at the bottom of the page in the browser (Chrome). I click to run the installer and get the User Account Control. I click Yes to run the program and up comes the same page that displayed when I first tried to run AS:

So I am just going round in circles! I must be doing something wrong but for the life of me I cannot find a way out of the loop. And before you ask I am running as Administrator.

Have you tried the advice at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library ... 10%29.aspx Installing the .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8 or 8.1 using the Control Panel method.

I don't know that it works, but I just reverted to my usual technique of a Google search.

Thanks for that link Mike. I did follow the instructions to use the "Turn Windows features on or off" and also used the Command Prompt route with the installation disk in Drive d:. But I have not been able to get either to work, although it seems that dotNet Framework is installed or, at least, known to the system.

Well it seems after all those problems I had a faulty install of Win 8.1. Having had no luck on the Parallels Forum I went onto the MS chat line. As they were demanding $99 dollars to sort things out I decided that self-help was the answer! I inserted the Win 8 Pro installation disk and things sprang into life. Win 8 reinstalled without any problem and I then loaded FH (no problems - of course!) and then AS (latest version). When I run AS up pops the message that .Net Frameworks 3.5 is required and I began to think that I was back to square one. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Going to the Control Panel I loaded the "Turn Windows features on or off" panel and clicked on the .Net Framework 3.5 section. This time the software downloaded and installed with no fuss and AS ran with no further problems.

The only issue now is whether things will work when I upgrade to Win 8.1. I have several Restore points created so that I can roll back to 8.0 and when I have time I will download and install 8.1.

Thanks to everyone who offered help with this problem. I'm not sure how you can determine whether an installation is faulty when everything else seems to work OK but if all else fails a reinstallation of the operating system might just be the answer.

Hmmm! Bet you're really looking forward to all the Windows 8.1 Updates and Windows 9. Not to mention OS X Yosemite and Parallels 10.

Having recently moved away from Parallels to VirtualBox on my Macs I can empathise with steady step by step process you're taking. - My reason for switching : Parallels (and VMWare) annual upgrades now cost more than Operating System Upgrades!

Presumably you only have a Windows 8 Activation Key meaning you can't go straight for a Windows 8.1 download and clean install. However there are well publicised ways to 'trick' the Microsoft Store into allowing a download of the Windows 8.1 iso with a Windows 8.0 Key and also of installing Windows 8.1 with a generic Activation Key which you later change to your real Key when installation completes. Added advantage you only have to download once. The worst part of my change was the lengthy automated telephone call(s) to Microsoft (thankfully free) to reactivate my Windows Key(s) because I was technically installing the OS on a new computer (virtual system). Having done this for Windows 7 and 8.1 on 3 Macs, it's all good practice!

I purchased Win 8 Pro so have the installation disc and activation key and need to download the Win 8.1 Upgrade. So, yes, things are a little more complicated. Not sure I want to upgrade to Win 9 until it has proved itself a stable platform - goodness knowns how long that will be. In any case, I will need to be sure that FH will run in Win 9.

I am in no rush to upgrade to 8.1 either as things are working OK with Win 8.

Yes, I too had the lengthy phone call to MS to get the "faulty" install activated. Don't they make you jump through hoops! Luckily the reinstall activated without any action on my part.

After that Yosemite should be a breeze! Not sure about Parallels 10, though.

This all started when I upgraded my iMac memory to 12GB. despite the problems that ensued the memory upgrade has vastly improved the performance of Mavericks when Win 8 is running. Previously everything slowed right down and that was one of the reasons I started down the Crossover route. I shall keep Crossover for emergencies but the performance of FH in Win 9 under Parallels is fine and now it no longer slows down the rest of the computer.
