V5 - 5.09 Update removed from computer

Post by sloanel » 04 Jul 2014 13:19

I have today tried to download the latest update but Norton keeps removing it as it says it includes a threat WS.Reputation.1
I therefore cannot update my FH5

Norton's summary information states:
Updated: February 15, 2012 3:15:47 PM
Type: Other
Risk Impact: High
Systems Affected: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000
Behavior: WS.Reputation.1 is a detection for files that have a low reputation score based on analyzing data from Symantec’s community of users and therefore are likely to be security risks. Detections of this type are based on Symantec’s reputation-based security technology. Because this detection is based on a reputation score, it does not represent a specific class of threat like adware or spyware, but instead applies to all threat categories.

The reputation-based system uses "the wisdom of crowds" (Symantec’s tens of millions of end users) connected to cloud-based intelligence to compute a reputation score for an application, and in the process identify malicious software in an entirely new way beyond traditional signatures and behavior-based detection techniques.

Are you aware of this? What can I do as I cannot override the Norton unless I deactivate it completely

unless there is a simple solution I think you should advise Calico Pie and/or Norton. I don't suppose a virus could have been introduced in the download process?

Thanks - thought I would check with others before reporting it but will do so shortly.

Repost it as a false positive to Norton and let Calico Pie know -- so few users have both their product and FH 5.0.9 it seems to trigger their 'there may be something nasty in the woodshed' response without any good cause.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-I ... d-p/232155 has instructions on how you can continue with the installation in spite of Norton's actions. You will also need to exclude the file from future scans.

Does Norton complain both when using the FH command Help > Check for Updates and when downloading directly from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade?

Yes, I tried it both ways and Norton rejected it both times.

Thank you to everyone who has replied to my message - I have now sorted it - I have taken it out of quarantine and uploaded the new file.
I have also advised both Calico and Norton of the problems I experienced.

Thank you all!
