Text in books

Post by JTempest » 10 Dec 2013 00:59

Hello again. In my book project I have noticed that in many (but not all) cases small amounts of information are missing in the text, although they do appear in the property dialogue. For example, places of birth or marriage are shown in the PD as say- Carlton, Vic., but in the book text just as Carlton, while many instances are correct. Does anyone know if there is a reason for this please?

Have you checked your report settings for places? By default FH shortens Place names when it's already used that place name in the report.

Hi again. The problem I had was in a Custom Report (Descendants by Generation Dialogue) preparatory to including it in my book. The solution suggested by Jane worked OK, but now that I have included it as part of the book, the same problem exists - shortened addresses.
I included it in the book by going to Edit Book and highlighting "Descendants by Generation" on the left of the box and highlighting Custom Order on the top right. Is this the right way? I haven't found any instruction as to what might be the correct way of transferring a Custom Report to a book. Help please. Merry Christmas. John.

I assume that you have saved your custom report under its own name.
Therefore, it appears listed under Publish > Custom Reports.
So in Edit Book under Available Items select Other Report... and click >.
Then you will get a list of all the Reports to choose from, which should include your Custom Report.

BTW The same concept applies to Custom Diagrams via the Other Diagram Type... item.

Thanks Mike; a fountain of knowledge as usual.
I did what you suggested, but the error is still there. In the Custom Report, the addresses are fine. But in the book, not. Help. John

Have you tried selecting the relevant report in the Edit Book: dialog and then clicking the Settings button (NB: "Item Settings" as shown by the tool-tip, not the Book Settings button)? Then you can use the Main tab of the Item Settings dialog, as before.

That is odd John, because I unticked the Use Short Form for Repeated Place Names option, and then used Save Report As > Custom Report Type with Custom Report Name such as Descend by Gen Long Places.

I then opened the Book and used Other Reports and selected Descend by Gen Long Places (custom) to add that Custom Report.
( Note that (custom) is important otherwise it won't be the Custom Report.)
This specific Report in the Book did have long Place names as in the standalone Custom Report.

It won't change any other Reports already in the Book.

Some settings can be changed for the whole Book by using Book Settings in the Edit Book window.
But the Use Short Form for Repeated Place Names option is per Report and can be changed after selecting a Report via the Settings button and the Main tab.

Somewhere in the above sequence you have not used the correct Report Settings for both the Custom Report and the same Report in the Book.
Just carefully check everything at each stage.

Hi Mike, Sorry not to reply sooner, but I have been away from home for a couple of days. Anyway, I again followed your instructions. I currently have the Custom Report named "Pending Ingamells Book", but that continued the problem when I included it in the "Book".
However, when I named the Custom Report again with the different name, it transcribed OK, so I can't explain that.
Now I can make final tweaks in the Property Box, which reflect immediately in the Book. I hope to go to print early in the new year. Hopefully I wont have any more need to seek your assistance, which is always readily given and gratefully received. Thankyou and all the best for 2014.
John.

Are you sure that the Custom Report named Pending Ingamells Book has the Use Short Form for Repeated Place Names option set correctly, i.e. unticked?
Is this setting maintained when this same Report is added to the Book?
I cannot think of any other explanation for the setting being wrong.
