novaPDF printer

Post by BarbaraF » 29 Nov 2013 14:14

I have had FH4 for several years but have suddenly found a problem when trying to save a chart as a PDF.

The chart has printed at the bottom:

"You created this PDF from an application that is not licensed to print to novaPDF printer (http://www.novapdf.com)"

Can someone help me sort this out please?

Can you confirm that you were trying to save as PDF from within the Family Historian program?
I would only expect this message to appear if you had previously saved the chart in another format, such as JPG, and were viewing it outside FH, using Windows Picture Viewer. If you tried to save it as PDF from there (by 'printing' to the Nova printer), it would produce the message.

Hi Lorna

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes I was trying to save within Family Historian. I had saved the diagram as a Chart and then using the Diagram menu saved it as a PDF.

I've had this error message. I think I ended up closing down my computer and it worked find when I reopened it.

The method that usually solves novaPDF printer problems is as follows.
  • Use Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  • Locate and select Family Historian PDF (novaPDF 7.7 printer) and click Uninstall.
  • Reinstall Family Historian 4.0 from CD or download.
  • Upgrade to FH V4.1.3 from download.

LOL! I got that message BUT I really was printing something else not from FH.

Naughty me! I got myself a different free PDF writer as the message looks a bit naff on the bottom of every page.

That is odd because I have tried printing several JPG from Windows Live Photo Gallery and IrfanView and Microsoft Office Picture Manager via Family Historian PDF without any errors.

But I do get the error from Windows Photo Viewer!

Thank you for the advice Mike.

Looks as though I will have to prepare to reinstall. Oh dear!

If re-installing FH V4.0 is tricky because you have to go back to V3 or V2 then just try installing V4.1.3

I only have to go back to V4. I hate reinstalling as I always worry that something will go wrong.

You also get the error if you print a Word document to the FH PDF printer

Hi Mike

Just thought I would let you know that I followed your advice and reinstalled the program. I can now create PDFs again. It was all much easier than I expected.

Thank you very much. I know where to come when I get stuck next time :)

Oh dear the problem has returned :(

Yesterday I was able to save several PDF documents very easily. Today I have tried to do some more and I am again getting the message that the application is not licensed to print to nova PDF printer.

Is there anything else I can do please?

As far as you are aware, are you sure you have no other PDF printing software installed similar to Nova PDF.
I presume you are only saving to PDF from within FH V4 itself.

Since you have tried the cure that usually works, I suggest that you E-mail the support team at Calico Pie using support@family-historian.co.uk and they should be able to resolve your problem.

I have no other PDF printing software as far as I know and yes I am only saving from within FH4.

Just in case I missed any steps yesterday I have repeated the uninstall and re-install process this morning and everything is currently OK.

Once I have saved the PDFs I need now I will close the program and see what happens when I start it up again!

It looks as though the problem has been solved as I am still able to create PDFs today with no warning on them.

Thanks for the help. I will know what to do should it happen again.
