Will Ancestral Sources Ever Be Finished?

Post by Essexraptor » 30 Aug 2013 17:01

Please, please will you ever finish this?

It's a great tool for data entry .... but it's in limbo and been like it for far too long now :(

I'm immensely grateful for it in its current state, and am happy to wait for Nick to find more time to work on it as and when he can. After all, he can hardly be making a fortune from software he gives away! In the meantime, there's no data entry that I can't do using FH -- I just need to take a little care to make sure it's right.

Hi

I know and I'm sorry. I do feel guilty about it but I've just had so many other things going on in my life that I've not been able to devote the many hours to this that I need to. I've spent many hundreds of hours on Ancestral Sources and Gedcom Census over the years and released new versions regularly for around 7 years. As I've said before the Burial/Deaths version of AS is almost finished and has been since earlier this year. It just lacks help file, source templates and a period of beta testing to iron out the bugs that will inevitably be present. This last push will be time consuming and also very dull. This is meant to be an enjoyable hobby and I get no pleasure from writing help files or producing source templates which is almost certainly why I've not been able to motivate myself to get it finished! I will try to find time soon.

My apologies again

Nick

No need to apologise, you do it for love not money. I'm grateful for what I get. :D

Nick,

I agree totally with Mark. If this were a commercial product it would be different. This is a free product provided for the benefit of FH users by another FH user. What you have provided so far is a great tool which many of us couldn't live without. Any enhancement to it is something that we all just have to wait for until it is ready. While I feel like I can't wait to get the enhancements, I will because they will make the product even better. Take your time and don't rush yourself, because that is how bugs will find their way into the program. I'm looking forward to the new release whenever it becomes ready.

I thought I was just asking when a great bit of help/software was going to be finished?

No one posts for months and I ask 1 question and the woodwork erupts. !!!!!

If you care to read back you'll see that ... given the time lapse... it was not a ungrateful question to ask... chill brothers.

Appreciate the candid answer NIck....

I think the others in the thread are just being kind and understanding in response to my reply rather than thinking your question was unreasonable. It was a very fair question to ask and I'm grateful to all of you for your patience.

Nick,

That is a great idea. If there is anything I can do to help out with the templates, let me know. I've done a few for the censuses.

Hi Nick
I think that we have corresponded before about help files; I'm a technical author and write help systems for a CAD/CAM company as my 'day job'. I'm happy to renew my offer to assist in creating (or completely create) the updates to the help file. Feel free to contact me for a chat.
