I tried to export part of my 34000-individual file, following the directions about copying the file, defining the group by named lists and/or queries, and then running the split tree helper (with 'delete anything NOT found by the query ...').
The program comes to a standstill whenever I try this, no matter what way I use (query 'Relations-Simple List' or named list followed by a query picking those from the named list), and no matter whether I opt for keeping all Note, Source etc. records or not.
The computer on which it is running is a one-week-old, with a gigabyte of memory, so I suppose memory cannot be the problem. Happened the same on my one-year old laptop, so I decided to wait for the new computer first, but it didn't change.
What am I doing wrong?
TIA

Is the computer processor running busy?
If you open the task manager does the processor appear busy?
For how long does the split hang?
Have you tried running the validate routine over the file prior to the split?

Jane,
the task manager says the processor is busy by 100%, and it also says that the program does not react. I did not try waiting for longer than a few moments after seeing the 'no reaction' entry in the task manager.
I hadn't run Validate, but did so just now, and it reported no problems.

I would recommend leaving FH, for at least 15-30 mins, especially if the processor is running flat out, I suspect it will take a while to process such a large file. Windows has a tendancy to say a program is not responding just because the program is working on something internally.

Jane,
oh - really? That's a new thought. Now I know what I might give the computer to do tonight so that it won't get bored ...
Thanks a lot

Jane,
thanks a lot. It must have been less than half an hour. Now I know I need to be patient ...
