I am thinking about whether it is viable for me to convert to LINUX as my OS rather than Windows 2000. Has anyone been running FH under Linux on a Windows emulator? I don't suppose Simon would consider porting FH to LINUX? There are a lot of home users out there.

I bought FH a few weeks ago and have been running it on Mandrake Linux. It works fairly well on the most recent version of wine but works a lot better on the commercial version of wine - Crossover from Codeweavers. Crossover does give a few problems but they are all minor and I can work around them.

Thanks Gary, I'll try Wine first before buying the CrossOver product. I hope that it works Ok on Ubuntu.

Hello Martin,
I'm now using FH 2.3.5 with wine version 0.9.10 and it works very well. Once you have installed you will need to do two things if you have a copy of Windows:

1) Copy over all of the .ttf font files from your c:windowsfonts directory to your .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts directory. This will sort out some font problems with the Query window in FH.
2) Also from Windows, you will need a copy of msvcrt.dll from c:windowssystem32 copying to .wine/drive_c/windows/system32. To make wine use the dll file you need to use the winecfg utility program that comes with wine to tell it to override wine's version of the library and use the Windows version instead. This fixes a problem with fields that have drop-down boxes.

Another thing I have done within the winecfg program is to tell wine to act as Windows98. I can't remember if this is necessary to do this any longer but if you get some problems then give this a try.

Come back to me if you need any further help getting started. I'm just wondering if Simon has made any changes in version 3 that will upset things. Hopefully not!

Cheers

Just to add - I'm now running Debian - of which Ubuntu is a derivative.

I have Ubuntu and wish to run FH v3 using wine. Have you encountered any problems or tips you can pass on.

I've managed to install v3 but it fails miserably when I try and run it. I live in hope that it will work eventually...
