Windows 8 installation
I've recently had to get a new laptop as the previous one had given up the ghost. I've now got Windows 8. Consequently I had to reinstall FH. I've got FH discs from version 2 with all the upgrades to version 5. As I had version 2.1.8 for 2002-3 I had to install the CD backed installer as per instructions on the FH website. I then tried to install the version 3 upgrade and got the error message: 'Error has occurred while trying to replace existing file - Delete code 5, Access is denied' - I couldn't get any further than this. Any help greatly appreciated...

You do not any longer have to install all the earlier versions, just V5.
You simply need your V4 and V5 licence key details.
See How to (Re-)install Family Historian.
I suggest you un-install FH and start again.

Thanks. I did download the evaluation version from the FH website, but only entered the version 5 licence key details, which it didn't like. Are you saying I have to initially enter version 4 licence key then the version 5 licence key?
Cheers, Martin.

The evaluation version is different to the full version, so your key will not work. You just need to run your Upgrade version 5 and enter both names and keys when prompted

Thanks but when I enter the key for version 4, the machine just locks up - it's happened twice now. I suspect this is one of the quirks of Windows 8 that everyone moans about. I'll give it another go in the morning.

Please read through How to (Re-)install Family Historian thoroughly.
In particular, check the advice at start of Installation Errors section.
Ensure you have UNINSTALLED any previous versions of FH before you start.
From the Start screen use Windows key + I key to open Settings.
or
From the Desktop use Windows key + X key to open a Menu.
Then select Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall any Family Historian versions.

All appears to be installed now, once I uninstalled previous erroneous attempts!
