Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Hi, i have just opened fam hist v.5 for the first time, created a new project. I was asked to name the focus person, and two others, which I did: myself, Mum and Dad. I then loaded in the 3 quite big gedcom files i had downloaded from ancestry.com to populate it. I merged them and all seemed well. However, when I exit and then re-open Fam Hist, it defaults each time to me and Mum and Dad, but they aren't linked to the other relatives. I know that the tree is there somewhere, cos I saw it when I did the gedcom merge. how can I get to the proper tree that i know is there!
many apologies. complete beginner

To answer the question you asked, just go to the records window. Menu View>Record Lists>Individuals find the person from the main tree and select it and select Edit>File Root>Set As File Root. This will set the person who is the base of your tree.

Secondly when converting a gedcom to a Project, you don't normally use merge, rather create a new project and select the gedcom.

This way you will have just that gedcom file, which you can then work on.

Take a look at

and

for more information on Projects and Merging.

There is also much advice via File > Project Window and click on Tips for New & Upgrading Users.

Also see the Help > Family Historian Help > Getting Started > Transferring Data into Family Historian.

Please spend some time working through the FH Help > Book: 'Getting the Most From Family Historian 5' and its tutorials.

Experiment as much as you like with the Family Historian Sample Project because it is easily reset using File > Project Window > More Tasks > Samples > Reset Sample Project.

Always refer to the advice available via FH Help buttons.

Try using the FHUG Search on the left, and scour the Wiki Knowledge Base.

If you still get stuck then we are all here to help.
