I am very happy with the 2.3 upgrade, the narrative report works well and the cut and paste is extremely useful.
I have seen comments about entering census data on other posts and I think the cut and paste of events for individuals is very useful here. I don't use the census event, preferring to enter a residence and an occupation for each person. I can now enter a residence for one person and then copy this to all the rest of the household, so it automatically picks up the place and address. One interesting effect of doing this is it also picks up the age of the first individual, but then, as I asked it to copy the whole event, it would do and it is quickly amended.
I have produced a few narrative reports and I have now realised my data entry standards have not always been consistent, so FH is now making me revise this to achieve a consistent format.
I like that the sources are now only referenced once in reports, this is a major improvement.
The removal of the step to choose a sex when adding an individual on a diagram is also good. Adding people to diagrams must be one of my favourite features it is so quick to add people. If one of my sisters in law comes over and asks for a tree showing her children with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and all first cousins I can do it in about ten to fifteen minutes.
The final feature which doesn't seem to get mentioned is that it's free. FH is still the only family history program with such a flexible user interface, I can only assume the other family history programs only manage to sell because a lot of family historians are fairly new to using computers so don't realise how much better things should be.

I have been trying to download the upgrade onto my new computer (I have WindowsXP now) but it never completes and says files are corrupted.I downloaded it with no problems onto my old computer (WindowsME) and was very happy with it.What should I do?
Also can the upgrade be copied onto a CdRom so I do not have to connect to the Internet for so long?[confused]

I have checked both the files and they are fine on the server.
I suspect your windows PC timed out during the download.
If you still have the install programs you downloaded on your other computer you can put those on CD and use them. I would not recommend copying the already installed programs.

Rachel,
I always copy each FH upgrade file onto a cd so that in the event of a computer problem or internet problem, I can always re-install FH and bring it up to date with the latest upgrade even if I cannot connect to the internet. That is the theory but I have never had to upgrade FH from the COPIED file but I imagine it would work ok.

How do I stop my PC from timing out?
I sit in front of it while it is downloading (very boring!)and it gets about three-quarters of the way through and then says download complete(which it obviously is not).Do I have to do something technical and scary to rectify all this!!![confused]

No promises, but try.
Go into Tools, preferences and select
Temporary Internet Files then
Delete Files
this should clear your internet cache also click on settings an ensure the cache size is no more than 10Mb, windows sometimes sets this far to large.

Rachel,
My internet connexion would recently often time out during the opening of a web page. The problem seems to have been a noisy connexion in the plug from the modem cable into the telephone line wall socket. In this case I was connecting via a doubling plug and this appears to be where the trouble was. I identified the problem because I could here a 'frying' noise on the phone which could be cleared by waggling this doubling plug.
This may not be your problem but I offer it in case.

Thanks Peter
I do not think that is the problem as I have just downloaded the DjVu Viewer for 1837online and although it took nearly an hour it downloaded 7.74MB (the transfer rate kept dropping until it reached 2.62KB a sec).It seems to have installed OK although I have yet to use it.I will keep persevering with the FH update-I might just get it in the end!!![mad]

I have now tried to download FH upgrade 8 times this evening every time it it finishes at a different place.
Is it possible to buy the upgrade on disc so I can install direct as I do not seem to be having much luck on the internet?[confused]
